Be it known that I, JAMES H. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saltillo, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat Construction; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and the saine.
The general object of this invention is to prevent any water which may enter through the bottom of a row boat, motor boat or similar craft from coming in contact with the occupants of the boat; also to increase the buoyancy of the boat and prevent accidental upsetting of the boat; and to this end the invention consists in providing a boat with a filler formed of layers of cork and of wood and arranged alternately one above the other, within the bottom of the boat, and so arranged that the uppermost layer of the filler will be one of wood so as to provide a iioor for the boat.
With the above and other objects in view as will more fully appear from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat having a portion thereof broken away so as to show the iller therein. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a boat of ordinary construction having a bottom 2, sides 3 and keel 4. Located within the boat, is a filler designated as an entirety by the numeral 5 and which is formed of a plurality of layers of wood and cork arranged one above the other, the layers of wood being designated by the letters a., c, and CZ and the layers of cork being designated by the letters e, f and g. Each layer of wood is formed of a Series of strips 6, as shown in F1 2, and the strips forming the layers a and c are extended transversely of the boat and have the opposite ends secured in any suitable manner to the sides of the boat, and the strips forming the layers Z) and d are extended longitudinally of the boat and at right angles to the strips forming the layers a and c and are secured in place in any suitable manner. The upper layer Z is adapted to serve as the floor of the boat, and may be coated with shellac or any suitable material. Each layer of cork may be formed of a continuous sheet or may be formed of pulverized cork, packed tightly between the adjacent layers of wood.
By virtue of arranging the strips forming the layers and CZ at right angles to those forming the layers a and c, the filler is rendered more compact and the cork layers are held in tight engagement with the adjacent strips forming the layers of wood, thereby resulting in the positive sealing of the crevices between adjacent strips of each layer of wood and preventing any water that may enter through the bottom of the boat, from finding its way through the floor of the boat.
Another advantage derived from the em-i ployment of the filler above described, is that the bottom of the boat will be suiiciently weighted so that accidental upsetting of the boat will be entirely prevented.
From the above it will be seen that by employment of a filler, as above described, the boat will be rendered more water proof and its stability increased.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a boat, of a plurality of superposed layers of wood located within the boat and each formed of sectional strips, the strips forming alternate layers being arranged transversely of the boat and the strips forming the other layers extending longitudinally of the boat, and layers of cork inserted between the layers of wood.
