Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 19. h.
7 Application filed August 18, 1915. SerialNo. 46,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Dawson Cox,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Porter, in the county of Grays Harbor and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved nut lock; and the main object thereof is to provide a device of this character which is unusually simple in construction and which, it is believed may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
The invention contemplates the provision of a nut lock wherein a substantially wedge shaped key is arranged in a vertically slotted bolt, the key carrying suitable radial projections which are engaged by the nut so that when the latter is moved into a secure position, the key will be correspondingly actuated thus causing the bolt to expand and retain the nut against retrograde movement? 4 Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
The above and other objectssvhich will become apparent, are accomplished by such means as are shown-in their preferred form in the accompan yin'g drawings, described in the following speeification and then more specifically poiiiteldgblitin the appended claims.
' ying drawings wherein like characters designate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing parts in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device showing parts in elevation.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates I the shank of the bolt member which carries and operate in an annular out out portion 1'? a head portion 11 at one end and is'screw threaded a portion of its length adjacent the other end asat 12. The screw threaded portion 12 is slotted as at 13, theslot 13 terminating in a somewhat restricted transverse cut out 142. The purpose of the out out 14 is to add greater resiliency to the projecting ends of the screw threaded portion. A wedge shaped key 15 is slidably arranged in the slot 13, the said keycarrying a pair of outstanding pro ections 16. Ihe projections 16 extend beyond'the. periphery of the screw threaded portionof the bolt in the nut 18. The function performed by the key 15 is thought to be readily obvious;
As the nut 18 is rotated on the screw. threaded portion of the bolt in 'a proper direction it will of course force the key along the slot 13. As the key is forced in the slot 13, the projecting ends of the screw threaded portion 12 will be uniformly spread so as to positively and effectually bind the nut in place. In actual practice it has been found that the removal of the nut is positively prevented by the locking action that is attained.
The usual washer 1-9 is shown in the drawings in order to more properly set forth the construction of my device.
From the foregoing it will be noted that this invention is exceedingly simplelin construction and that the parts may beformed from stock material. In view of this. cons'truc tion' the cheap cost of manufacture will be readily recognized.
In reducing my mvention to practice I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most efficienh'but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrence withithe adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes inthe details of construction and outer face of said nut, lateral projections on said wedge key. and said nuts provided with a recess to receive said lateral projections, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a nut lock. a bolt member. said bolt member being slotted a portion of its length, said bolt provided with a second slot of less width than said first mentioned slot to communicate' with said first mentioned slot, a
nut member to be movably mounted on said bolt member, a wedge key to be slidable in said first mentioned slot, lateral pro ections on said wedge 'member, said nut member iio provided with a recess to receive said lateralprojections, whereby said key may be moved positix'elyt in one direction in consistence with movement of the nut member, and sald edge key terminating flush with the inner and outer 'fa'ces ofthenutmember whereby it will be protected at all times, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
