62. Frank P K02761 11 h is Gtto'awz 5 CD. I 3 Mfigg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. KOBERT, OF MILLDALE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL ELECTRIC BIVETER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
ELECTRIC RIVETIN G APPARATUS.
Application filed May 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. KOBERT, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Milldale, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Riveting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in electric riveting and especially to apparatus of this class used for riveting two plates or articles together, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus of this class which is simple in construction and convenient of operation, and which may be easily manipulated by any one having a knowledge of this class of devices; a further object being to provide an apparatus of the class specified which involves the principles, construction and operation of an ordinary power press provided with a vertically movable plunger; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an apparatus of the class specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a part of the framework of a power press provided with my improvement, part of the construction being broken away; Fig. 2 a sectional plan on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown at a a part of the frame of an ordinary power press having a vertically movable plunger a which is operated in the usual manner, but the operative mechanism of which is not shown.
The press a is provided with a table I) on which, in practice, the plates or parts 6 to be riveted together are placed, and in the practice of my invention I pivot to the back portion of the table 6 as shown at 1) two electrode arms 0, which extend forwardly and which are provided with springs 0 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Serial No. 30,297.
which normally hold the front ends thereof separated, and the rear ends thereof connected, or partially so, and mounted rearwardly of the table 5 is a vertically movable rod d operated by a pedal (Z and provided with a wedgeshaped head (Z which is adapted to pass between the rear ends of the arms 0 and to separate the front ends thereof, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
Conductors e are connected with the arms a, and these conductors are also connected, in practice, with an electrical transformer, as described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent No.1,139,300 granted to me May 11,1915.
In the normal position of the above described parts, the parts 0, (Z and d are in the position shown in full lines, and the front ends of the electrode arms 0 are separated but when the pedal (Z is depressed the front ends of the arms 0 will be forced inwardly, as shown in dotted lines.
In practice, the table Z) is provided centrally of its front edge portion with a recess f to receive the head of a rivet g, and the plates or other parts 5 are placed on said table over said recess and provided with apertures through which the rivet 9 passes, and the rivet 9 extends above said plates, as shown in Fig. 1. Vhen the parts are in this position the pedal d is depressed, the front ends of the arms 0 are forced inwardly and come in contact with the opposite sides of the end of the rivet g, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in this operation the circuit is completed through said arms, the conductors e and through the rivet g and the transformer hereinbefore referred to, and the end of the rivet g is highly heated, after which the pressure on the pedal (Z is released and the rod (Z drops into its normal position and the springs 0 separate the arms 0, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and at this time the plunger a descends and the end of the rivet g is riveted or headed, as will be readily understood, and any desired number of movements of the plunger a may be used for this purose.
p It will be understood, of course, that the plunger a is under the control of the operator, and is operated in the same manner as in other machines of this class, or in other power presses, and the arms 0 are insulated as is also the head (i of the rod d, and with my improvement, the operation of chine at all times, and the personal equation becomes the chief element in the operation of said machine, and while I have shown and described the construction and the details thereof which I prefer, my invention is not limited thereto, and changes therein and modifications thereof, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
With the construction shown the circuit passes transversely through the end of the rivet, and said end of the rivet is highly heated, and in Fig. 2 I have indicated a modification in which a conductor e is connected with the table 5, and with this form of construction, the circuit wires or conductors c are both positive, while the conductor 6* is negative, and the conductor 6 is also connected with the transformer referred to and in the operation of this form of construction the rivet will be highly heated, the electric current passing longitudinally therethrough.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A machine for riveting two plates or articles together, comprising a frame provided with a table on which said plates or articles are placed, said machine being also provided with a vertically movable plunger, means for establishing an electric circuit through a rivet passed upwardly through Copies of this patent may be obtained for said plates or articles and heating the end thereof to be operatedupon by said plunger and involving two electrode arms pivoted over the rear portion of said table and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane, tensional devices for holding said arms out of operation, and manually operated devices for throwing said arms into operative position.
2. A machine for riveting two plates or articles together, comprising a frame provided with a table on which said plates or articles are placed, said machine being provided with a vertically movable plunger, andmeans for establishing an electric circuit through a rivet passed upwardly through said plates or articles and heating the end thereof, said means involving two electrode arms pivoted over the rear portion of said table and adapted to swing horizontally, utomatic devices for holding said arms out of operative position, a vertically movablerod mounted in the back portion of the machine and adapted to throw said arms into operative position, and a pedal connected with and adapted to operate said rod.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 22nd day ofMay 1915.
FRANK P. KOBERT.
