Be it known that we, GEORGE A. BULL and CASE E. LoNEs, citizens of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Chio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, of which the follow- `ing isa specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for checking doors and holding them open or partly open, andhas for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of-'tzhis character.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simply constructed device which may be .attached to doors of various forms and sizes without material structural change either in the door or in the improved device.
Another object Aof the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which automatically adapts itself to uneven floors or 'inclined floors.
With these and other objects in view, thev invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the device from the front; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the device from one side; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modification inthe construction; Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a. view similar to Figs. 1 and 4, illustrating another modiication in the construction; Fig. 7 is .gu

The improved device comprises a cylindrical shell 10 having adetach/able top andA perforated brackets 11 by which the device is secured to a door, a portion of which is indicated 1conventionally at 12.

' shown in Figs. 4and 6.

By this means, the support 19 is'free'to swinglaterally to a certain extent, and is limited in its movement by the angular upper form of the support 19, as represented at 20. By this means, the support 19, together with the caster wheel 21,' is free to4 swing into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the caster wheel automatically adapts itself to the un'even portionsof a 4floor or t0 an inclined floor, indicated at 22.
vIn the construction illustrated in Figs. 4v and 6 the member 16 is provided with rigid ears 23 lspaced apart and between which the caster wheel 21 is rotatably mounted.
In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a longitudinal guideway 24 projects from the shell 10 at one side and communicates at 25 at its upper portion with the interior of the shell and is provided at its `lower portion with a downwardly opening slot 26, the ideway 24 having a stop notch or recess 27. Slidably disposedl Within the guideway 24, is a. plunger 28 from which an ear 29 eX- tends through the slot 26. Pivoted at 30, upon theyear 29, is a stop device 31 having a'flat upper face and supported yieldably in position relative to the ear 30hy a spring 32. A relatively large springA 33 is disposed around the bolt 14 between the stop member 13 and the plunger member 16, and operates to maintain the bolt and thecaster wheel yieldably in projected position, a illustrated in Figs. 1 .and 2. The cable 34 is of sufficient length to causey the caster wheel 21 to be Withdrawn from engagement with the floor, represented conventionally at 39, Pwhen the inner edge of the stop' member 31 has been depressed to a sulicient extent to engage inv the notch 27. By this arrangement, when the memberv 31 is released from engagement with the notch 27, the spring 33 will project the caster wheel 21 into engagement with the ioor and thus hold the door in .whatever position it may be placed, and when the door is to be released, the member 31 is 'forced downwardly untilv its inner edge engages in the notch 27, this 'movement-elevating the plunger 14 and the caster wheel connected therewith against the resistance of the spring 33 and thus withdrawing the caster Wheel from engagement with the floor.
l The -spring 32 operates to force the inner edge of the member'3l into thenotch 27 when the member 31 is depressed.

1. In a device of the class described, a tubular support adapted to be attached to A:adoor, a spring pressed plunger within the support, anda-frame carrying a supporting wheel and mounted to swing late-rally relative to said plunger, whereby the supporting wheel is caused to automatically conform to unevenness of surface.
2. In a device of the class described, a tubular'support adapted to be attached to a door, a spring pressed plunger within the support and having a downwardly directed ear, 'and -a frame carrying a supporting wheel and including sides-spaced apart and pi-voted by the spaced sides to said ear,
the ,upper terminals of said ears being re- 'versely inclined to ,.limitthe lateral movement of the frame, whereby the supporting unevenness of surface.
3. In a device of the class described,
' wlieel is caused to automatically conform to said support and carrying a supporting wheel, a' member slidable in said guideway, a guide pulley, and a fiexible member connected at one end to said slidable member vand operatively connected'at the other end to said pulley.
