Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER BUswELL, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Core Members for Linotype-Molds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement upon the hollow cored linotype mold which is shown and described in the Lynds Patent No. 1,078,930, dated November 18th, 1913; or more exactly, it is an improved core member that is especially adapted for use as a part of such linotype mold as is shown and described in said prior patent.
The object of this invention is to provide, for use with such a linotype mold, a flexible core member which is inexpensive and durable. v
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the drawing and hereinafter described and pointed out definitely in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a core member embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hollow cored part of such member,the drawing showing said core bottom side up; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the base of said core member; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of said core member partly sectioned; and Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the base of said core member.
Each core member includes a hollow core 13, and a base D, which parts are made separately, substantially as the drawing shows;
and are then secured together. Each core is externally tapered more or less on all sides from the rear or base to the closed front end. Each consists of a top Z) and bottom 7), two sides 6 b and a front end 6 The rear end or base of this core is open; and a recess 72 is cut in the rear edge of the bottom wall of said core,the depth of said recess being substantially equal to thethickness of the tail piece of the base member D. This core is of such construction that it may be easily drawn into shape between suitable dies; and when so constructed the walls thereof may be thin enough to have the necessary flexibility.
The base member has a head cl, and a tail piece cl. The head fits into the open rear end of the core, and the tail piece fits the recess 6 in the rear edge of the bottom wall of the core. Preferably also the rear edge of the recessed part of the bottom of the core projects into a shallow groove d formed in the bottom surface of the base member, in the plane where the tail piece and head thereof are joined. When the. parts have been assembled, as shown, the contacting surfaces of the core walls and base are brazed or welded together. The resulting structure is a core member adapted to be substituted for a core member as shown in the above mentioned prior patent. And when the required number of these new core members are secured to the mold of said prior patent, in the manner disclosed in said patent, the result is a very efficient and durable cored linotype mold.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A hollow core member for linotype molds, comprising a core which has thin flexible walls and which is open at its rear end and is tapered from its open rear end toward its closed front end,-the bottom wall of said core having a recess in its rear edge, and a base member comprising a head which fits into the open rear end of said core, and a tail piece which fits and fills the recess in the rear edge of the'bottom wall of the core,--the contacting parts of said core and base being connected together.

A hollow core member for linotype molds, comprising a core which has thin flexible walls and which is open at its rear end and is tapered from its open rear end toward its closed front end,the bottom wall of said core having a recess in its rear edge, and a base member comprising a head which fits into the open rear end of said core, and a tail piece which fits and fills the In testimony whereof, I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
