Description
UNTTED STATES ORRIN W. SWIFT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CAR VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,941', dated August B, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN W. SWIFT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Car-Ventilator 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accoi'npanying drawing' and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing' constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure l, the two parts as folded together 5 Fig. 2, the reverse side, the broken lines showing the manner of turning the'parts to extend them into the open position in Fig. 3 5 Fig. 4, a vertical section through the window illustrating the application ofthe device; and in Fig. 5, a transverse section of the same.
This invention relates to the construction of a device to be introduced into open car-windows as a guard to turn oii' the dust or smoke which would otherwise enter the window; and consists in two plates pivoted together, so that by turning the two parts on the said pivot they are extended, and in this extended position are placed beneath the sash outward and inclining backward from the direction ofthe car movement.
A B are the two parts pivotcd together at a, so that, from the position seen in Fig. 1, the partA may be turned upon the said pivot up to the position in Fig. 3, thus extending the device to its full length, the pivot a being placed above the center of the part B, as denoted in the drawing. B is the lower part, and is inclined toward one edge, as at d, corresponding to the inclination of the windowsill. On the part A a notch, n, is formed, which, when turned up and set in position, receives the sash, as in Fig. 4. On the part B a stud or equialent device, m, is arranged,
' which serves as a stop, against which the end of the partA bears when turned up, as seen in Fig. 3, and when the parts are closed the notch z' on the side of the partApasses onto the said stud, as in Fig. 2, and thus retains the parts in a folded position.
These parts may be made from pasteboard or other thin material and at a triiling cost, the design of this device being for the use of travelers. The device is set in the window, as seen in Figs. 4 and 5, the outer edge swinging' back to incline the device, as in Fig. 5.
I claim as my invention- As an article'of manufacture, the herein-described device for ventilator, consisting of the two parts A B pivoted together at c, as specified, one part provided with the notch f and the other with the notch fn so as to be extended and set in the car-window, as herein set forth.
ORRIN W. SWIFT.
