To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas Water- Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heating water in tanks and boilers, and has particular reference to kitchen rangeboilers.
Numerous devices are employed to place under the ends of vertical boilers for heating them without the use of separate gas heaters, and the object of this invention is to heat the horizontal boilers without a heating unit to occupy space apart from the boiler.
The object is attained by the means set cured thereto, the heater being shown also in transverse section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the. heaters. Fig. 3 1s a transverse section through the heater shown in Fig. 2. Fig. l is an elevation showing a boiler and a heater both partly in cross section. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a heater provided with an upward widening chamber for the products of combustion. Figs. 3 and 5 are modifications of the heaters as shown in the other figures. i
In Fig. 1 1) represents a horizontal range boiler in transverse section resting upon one of the brackets cl used on ranges to support the boiler, only the upper portion of the bracket being shown. The heater A comprises a shell a forming the back of the heater, with side flanges 0, see also, Fig. i. The back and flanges may be, as shown, an integral casting, or it may be formed of sheet metal, or it may be made in pieces, the method of construction being an immaterial point. It is not material that the back of the heater frame conforms to the contour of the side of the boiler; but the flanges c are made to fit against the boiler reasonably close to insure the retention of the heated gases until they reach the outlet at the top of the frame. In Fig. l are shown three gas burners e, e, 6 having chambers z, i, '5, shown also in Fig. i, that are integral with the heater frame. They are provided with gas ajutages Z, and, as shown in Fig. 4, they are each provided with a gas and air supply nozzle 0, and independent gas cocks r. At 0, Fig. 4., and at c, o, '0, Fig. 1, are shown slots for the admission of air to the heating chamber. Like slots are shown also in Figs. 2 3 and 5. The heating chamber comprises the space m between the space described and the side of the'boiler. Where the gas burner is located the chamber is enlarged to admit of free gas combustion, and the space is reduced gradually to the outlet at, that is, the space is narrowed between the back of the heater frame and the boiler. There is an advantage in keeping the heatedair as long as possible in contact with the surface of the boiler, and one method of accomplishing this is to widen the heating chamber between the side walls as they rise from the burner, as shown in Fig. 5. 'When so widened an outlet is provided at each end of the top of the chamber, as at n, n, in
order to obtain a uniform distribution of v the hot air currents.
;'.1 Tl1e back of the heating chamber is preferably lined with asbestos, fire brick or like heat-non conductors, and such a lining is shown at Z Fig. -1.
The object of the extension f of the frame of the burner, with the upturned termination .9, is this: The impinging of gas flames against so large a portion of the side of the boiler results in a free condensation of the vapor of the burned gas. WVater gathers on the side of the boiler and drips from the boilers lowest point. The extension f catches the drip, and the heat of the plate evaporates it and it is carried off to the chimney.
In Fig. 3 a single burner c is shown, with the single chamber 2' with ajutages Z, as shown in elevation in Fig. 2, with a single gas supply 0. Fig. 3 also shows a form of construction that does not extend so far below the bottom line of the boiler, the end 8 being nearly straight, with a shallow basin 5 formed between the end .9 and the vent slot o. This form occupies less of the space between a boiler and the top of a range.
This heater may be detachably secured to the boiler by means of a strap as in Figs. 1 and 3, in which a metal strap 79 is shown to be secured at one end to the top of the heater, is passed around the boiler and the lower end is secured to the heater by a screw 9. In Fig. 4 the heater is shown as secured to the boiler supporting bracket d, bolts 3 securing the heater and a bolt u fastening the bracket t to the bracket d. These heaters may be made in lengths adapted to varying lengths of boilers and the amount of work to be done. Figs. 2 and 4; show heaters that would be short as compared with boilers with which they are shown. F or a given diameter of boiler different lengths of heaters would be made for different requirements.
Obviously, these heaters can be made with the burners directly under the middle of the boiler. The object of placing the burner upon the side of the boiler is two-fold, first, to confine the heater to unoccupied space, as it would be, as shown on the rear side of the boiler; second, to obtain quick heating. If the heater in Fig. l were central under the boiler, the circulation of the water would be in vertical lines, right through the center of the body of water, and the entire quantity of water would be warmed before hot water could be drawn from the boiler. With the burner at one side, as in Fig. 1, the circulation begins at once following the lines of the arrows on the right, the cold water following the course of the arrow 8. Very soon after lighting the gas warm water gathers at the top of the boiler, and hot water can be drawn from the top while the bottom of the boiler will continue cold.
Although as herein shown these heaters are represented as having the burners made integral with the heater frames, that feature is not essential, and the burners may be separate from the frames.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Claims.
1. The combination with a horizontal boiler of a gas heater consisting of a casing to cover a part of the side of the boiler, the casing comprising a covering with side walls to fit the contour of the boiler, the lower part of the casing enlarged to constitute a combustion chamber, a gas burner in the combustion chamber, apipe outlet at the top of the casing, the lower end of the combustion chamber converged toward the boiler forming a shallow trough between the inlet and the burner, the extreme edge of the outlet suspended just forward of the middle of the under side of the boiler, and a strap around the boiler attached to the upper and lower edges of the casing.
