Description

JAMES sQ MILLER. y
Improvement n Joist-Hook.
Patented August 8, 1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JAMES S. MILLER, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN JUIST-HOOKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES S. MILLER, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Joist-Hook; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The ligure is a side view of my improved device, part being broken away to show the construction.
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple, effective, and convenient device for raising joists after being placed in a wall to level them; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a standard, to the upper end of which is pivoted a lever, B. To the forward end of the lever B is pivoted the shank of a hook, C. To the standard A, a little above its lower end, is
securely attached an arm, D, to the outer end of which is attached, or in it is formed, a guidesocket, c', through which the shank ofthe hook C passes. the standard A is placed upon the top of the wall near the end of the joist to be raised, with the hook C projecting downward along the said ,joist. The free end of the lever B is then raised, which throws the lower or hooked end ofthe hook C forward, so as to pass beneath the lower edge of the joist. The free end of the lever Bis then pressed downward, which raises the end of the joist and allows it to be conveniently leveled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The standard A, lever B, hook C, and arm D c', said parts being constructed and arranged in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: JAMES S. MILLER.
