To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, WiLLIAM Hmoms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvanla, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in convertible chairs, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of the character stated which may be utilized as a chair as a couch, or bed, and as a table with stools provided for seating the occupants at the table.

A further object is to provide a convertible chair having a back which may be inclinecl at any angle when in use as a chair, which may be positioned horizontally when in use as a bed or couch, or when in use as a table, and rovide stools connected to hin ed bars, wich latter operate as rungs of t e chair when the stools are not in use.

A further ob'ect is to provide an improved device of the c aracter stated which 1s neat and attractive in appearance, and which is capable of a wide range of utility as a piece of household furniture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved convertible chair. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through the center of the chair, the view being ou an appreciably larger scale than Fig. 1. Fig. 3 1s a broken plan view partly in section illustrating m improved device when in use as a table. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the parts as shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved device in operative position as a couch.

1 represents the seat of the chair supported by four legs 2.

3 represents the arms of the chair which are connected by hinges 4 with uprights 5, the latter connected by hinges 6 with the seat 1, so that these arms are permitted to swing downwardly and rearwardly when permitted by filler pieces 7. These filler pieces 7 are normally under the arms 3 between the uprights 5, and at their lower ends are connected by hinges 8 with the seat, so that whenever desired, these iller pieces may be swung outwardly and downwardly to allow the arms to move rearwardly an downwardly as shown in Fig. 5.

9 represents the back of the chair which is provi( ed at its lower edge with metal plates l0 mounted to swing in recessed brackets 11 secured to the seat 1. The back 9 is cut out or recessed to accommodate the ends of the bracket 11, and by reason of this construe tion the back can be pivotcd to or removed from the brackets as occasion may require.

The arms 3 0f the chair are provided at their rear ends with slotted plates 12, and back of the plates, the arms are recessed as shown at 13 to accommodate rods 14, said rods being pivotally connected to the chair back 9 by means of rivets 15, connecting the said reds to couplings 16 which are T-shape and move in longitudinal grooves 17 in the walls of back 9. The rods l-l, at their forward ends, are provided with laterally projecting screw-threaded lugs 18 which have circular thumb nuts 19 on their outer ends. These thumb nuts may be, tightened and loosened to permit the adjustment of the back and to prevent any accidental movement, the outer faces of the plates 12 are provided with enlargements 20, between which the thumb nuts 19 may be located and prevent any accidental longitudinal movement of the rods after they are once adjusted.

21 represents a removable support which is adapted to be positioned at the front of the chair seat. This support 21 may, of course, be connected in various ways. I have illustrated as a simple form of connection, in order to explain my invention, dowel pins Q2 on the support which engage in recesses 23 in the seat. One side of the support is provided with a cushion 24 which is uppermost; when the support is at the front of the chair seat, and which is lowermost when the support is stored beneath the seat. When this support is not desired for use, it is located in aides 21 under the seat, so that it is out o sight and out of the way.

26 represents the cushion for the back of the chair. fl`hese cushions are preferably connected so that while they are free to movel relative to each other, they can be removed and remain together.

The chair legs 2 are connected by rungs :27. 'lhese rungs are secured at one end to the legs by hinges 28, and at their other ends are provided with hasps 29 which receive staples 30 on the legs of the chair, and are secured by hooks 31. By reason ol this construction, each of the rungs is capable of swinging outwardly from the chair and at the free end of each rung, I provide a hinged arm 3Q, and at the free end of each hinged arm, I )rovide a stool 33. These stools are preferably of the type indicated with adjustable seats 34 having screws 35 engaging the standards of the stool.

When the device is in use as a chair, all of the rungs Q7 will be as shown in Figs. l and 2, that is to say, the arms 32 are folded inwardly and the free ends of the rungs are secured by means of the hasps 29 as above described. When the device is to be used as a couch, the filler pieces 7 are swung downwardly, and the back 9 is lowered to a horizontal position. When in this position, the rear rung 27 is swung outwardly, and the stool 33 carried thereby is positioned under the back 9 to support the same. Also, when in use as a couch, the support 21 is positioned at the forward end of the seat 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. When the device is to be used as a table, the back 9 is detached 'from the brackets 11 and swung downwardly upon the arms 3, so that it assumes a horizontal position as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. When in this position, the several rungs Q7 are swung outwardly, and the stools positioned to receive their occupants.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alter ations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A convertible chair comprising a seat, a back adapted to be positioned above the seat to form a table top, legs supporting the seat, rungs havinr hinged connection at one end to certain o? the legs respectively and removable connection at their other ends to other of said legs, and stools connected to said rungs, substantially as described.

2. A convertible chair comprising a seat, arms on the scat, a back adapted to be positioned on the arms to form a table top,

legs supporting the seat, rungs having hinged connection at one end to certain of the legs respectively and removable connection at their other ends to other of said legs, arms hinged to the free ends ot' the rungs, and stools connected to the free ends of the arms, substantially as described.

3. A convertible chair comprising a seat, legs supporting the seat, uprights hinged to the seat, arms hinffed to the uprights to move rearward there rom, a chair back removably and pivotally connected at its lower end to the seat, devices adjustably connecting the back with the arms, and filler pieces adapted to be positioned under the arms to hold the latter against rearward and downward movement, substantially as described.

4. A convertible chair comprising a seat, legs supporting the seat, uprights hinged to the seat., arms hinffed to the uprights to move rearward thererom, a chair back removably and pivotally connected at its lower end to the seat, devices adjustably connecting the back with the arms, filler pieces hinged to the sides of the seat and when in an upri ht position, located under the arms and a apted to be swung downwardly to permit the arms and back a downward and rearward movement to change the chair into a couch, substantially as described.

5. A convertible chair comprising a seat, legs supporting the seat, uprights lnnged to the seat, arms hinged to the uprights to move rearward therefrom, a chair back removably and pivotally connected at its lower end to the seat and adapted to be positioned on the arms to form a table, devices adjustably connecting the back with the arms, filler pieces hinged to the sides of the seat and when in an u riffht position, located under the arms and) adapted to be swung downwardly to permit the arms and back a downward and rearward movement to change the chair into a couch, run s connecting the legs of the chair having inged connection at one end and removable connection at their other ends, bars connected to the free ends of the rungs, and stools connected to the bars, one of said stools adapted to be ositioned under the back when the latter is in a horizontal position to form a couch substantially as described.
