APPARATUS FOR HOLDING PAPER-ROLLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josrra HUNDHAUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schofield, in the county of Marathon and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Holding Paper-Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements for holding paper rolls, and has for an object to provide an improved apparatus for mounting paper rolls of varying sizes and connecting the same to revolve with the shaft to wind or unwind the paper.
The invention broadly consists in providing a pair of holding members adapted to firmly grip the interior of the paper roll and mounted to slide longitudinally on the Shaft, cam means being arranged between the shaft and holding members for expanding the latter, and mechanism for moving said members into and out of engagement with the cam means.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an improved apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of the improved apparatus shown as in expanded condition firmly gripping the paper roll.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the usual paper receiving shaft found on winders, re-winders, and like machines, the same being operated by any suitable mechanism in either direction to wind or unwind the paper from the roll 2.
The improved holding apparatus, as constructed in accordance with the present invention, includes a pair of holding members 3 and 4 mounted to slide longitudinally on the shaft 1, and slotted, as indicated at 5 in Fig. 8. to receive guides 6 secured shaft 1, as indicated at 7, for properly directing such longitudinal movement. Along to the their adjacent edges the holding members 3 and 4 are provided with series of complemental wedge slots 8 and 9, the same cooperating with cam pieces 10 projecting from the shaft 1, and arranged to lie wholly within the same when the device is in the contracted position shown in Fig. 1.
To one side of the holding members 3 and 4, the shaft 1 is embraced by a pair of semicylindrical sleeve sections 11 and 152, threaded, as indicated at 13, for receiving a pair of stationary clamp nuts 14 and 15 and a traveling nut 16. The traveling nut 16 is adapted to freely operate over the threads 13 between the stationary nuts 14 and 15, and is connected to actuate the sections 3 and 4 as hereinafter described.
The sleeve sections Hand 12 are cut away along their adjacent edges at the threaded ends thereof to provide diametrically disposed slots 17 and 18 for accommodating reciprocating links or connecting rods 19 and 20. As disclosed to advantage in Fig. 2, each of the holding members 3 and 4 are provided with spaced eyes 21 and 22, receiving therebetween the rolled end 23 of the respective links or connecting rods 19 and 20; pintles 24 being passed through the alining eyes to form a hinge joint between said members and links for facilitating the movement of the former from contracted into expanded condition. At the opposite ends the links 19 and 20 are provided with spaced lugs 25 and 26, loosely embracing the traveling nut 6 and engaged thereby during the movement of said nut to reciprocate the links and transmit motion to the holding members 3 and 4.
\Vhen not in operation the device is in the contracted position shown in Fig. 1, where the holding members 3 and 4 tightly embrace the shaft 1, and the cam pieces 10 are received wholly within the wedge slots 8 and 9. In such contracted condition the roll 2 is mounted over the end of the shaft 1 and slipped over the holding members 3 and 4 to the position substantially shown in Fig. 3. The traveling nut 16 is thereupon revolved to move the same axially of the shaft 1 in the direction of the stationary nut 14; and during such movement, through the links 19 and 520, will draw the holding members 3 and 4 longitudinally of the shaft. As the holding members 3 and 4 are so moved the wedge sl ts 8 and 9 of the same will encounter and ride over the cam pieces 10, expanding the members to firmly engage the roll. The device is now in readiness for operation, and the shaft may be revolved to wind or unwind the paper roll. After the operation of winding or unwinding has been completed, the traveling nut 16 will be revolved in the opposite direction, moving the same toward the stationary nut 15, and through the associated links 19 and 20 carrving the holding members 3 and 4 to initial contracted position; the longitudinal movement of said holding members being directed and confined by the guides 6 operating in the slots 5 thereof.
I desire it to be understood that the traveling nut 16 and associated devices for moving the holding members 3 and 4 longitudinally, may be replaced by an eccentric mechanism or any other suitable mechanical arrangement found desirable or necessary. It will be appreciated that the shaft and holding members, as described and shown in the drawings, are adapted to receive and hold any kinds and sizes of cores of various character of materials; and the device is also applicable for winding or rewvinding paper rolls without cores.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus for holding paper rolls, the crmbination of a shaft, a plurality of holding members mounted to slide longitudinally on said shaft and adapted to engage the paper roll, means for expanding said holding members when moved in one direction, a sleeve fixed to rotate with said shaft, an actuating device mounted to move axially on said sleeve, and links arranged between said actuating device and holding members for moving the same longitudinally into expanded condition, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for holding paper rolls, the combination of a shaft, a plurality of holding members mounted to slide longitudinally on said shaft and adapted to engage the paper roll, means for expanding said members when moved in one direction, a sleeve fixed to rotate with said shaft and provided with slots therein, a traveling nut mounted to rotate and move axially on said sleeve, and a plurality of links connected between said traveling nut and holding members for moving the same longitudinally into expanded position, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus for holding paper rolls, the combination of a shaft, a plurality of holding members mounted to move longitudinally on said shaft and adapted to engage the paper roll, a sleeve constructed of a plurality of sections cut away to provide slots therebetween, stationary nuts for clamping the sections of said sleeve to tightlv embrace said shaft, a traveling nut operating between said stationary nuts, and a pluralitv of link connections reciprocating in said slots and connected between said traveling nut and holding members for moving the same into and out of expanded condition. substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus for holding paper rolls, the combinatirn of a shaft. cam pieces mounted on said shaft, a pluralitv of holding members adapted to engage the paper roll and provided with wedge slots cooperating with said cam pieces to expand the same, guides for confining and directing the movement of said holding members. a sleeve constituted of a plurality of sections cut away to provide slots therebetween, a pair of statie-nary nuts for clamping said sleeve sections to rotate with said shaft. a traveling nut operating between said stationary nuts, a plurality of links operating in the slots in said sleeve and connected to move with said traveling nut, and hinge connections between said links and holding members, substantially as described.
