KILN.
It is the primary purpose of invention to produce a kiln structure embodying an improved arrangement of the heat distributing fines or passages whereby the heat and products of combustion are admitted above, as well as below'the kiln floor so that the'brick or tile within the furnace will be uniformly burned. 1
The invention has for an additional object to provide a kiln which may be economically operated, and in which the heat is most effectively utilized so that the time necessary for the proper burning of theclay is reduced to a minimum. a
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,-in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a kiln embodying the preferred form of my invention;'Fig. 2 is a vertical section; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. at is a section taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, designates the base or foundation upon which the kiln structure is built. This kiln structure includes the vertical body wall which, in the illustrated form of the invention, is circular and provided with an arched dome 6. Upon the base 5, within the circular body wall of the kiln,v a series of parallel vertical walls? are built, said walls being spaced from eachother and constituting leaders for the products of combustion, which are admitted into said spaces in the manner to be hereinafter explained. Each of these walls is provided with a multiplicity of openings indicated at 8.
Exteriorlv of the kiln wall 6, andv upon opposite sides thereof, the furnaces, generally indicated by the numeral 9, are built,
Specification of Letters Eatent.
four such furnaces being preferably employed 1n each series, although it is obvious that a greater or less number of such furnaces may be used, in accordance with the desired. capacity of the kiln. Each furnace is located directly opposite to an inlet opening 10 in the wall 6 of the kiln and beneath each furnace grate, an ash pit 11 is formed.
Upon the vertical lead walls 7, the floor 12 of the kiln'is built, said floor consisting of a plurality ofrows of fire brick, the bricks in each row being spaced apart and resting at their ends'upon the upper edges of the.
adjacent walls 7. Thus, a plurality of ver-' tical passages is produced between these floor bricks, which communicate with the spaces between the lead walls7, thusadmitting the products of combustion to the interior of the kiln. Upon each sideof the Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed January 6, H315. Serial No. 849. V Y V kiln and contiguous to the series of furnaces,
the fire bricks 12 are arranged compactly or in contact with each other, as this point of entrance from the furnaces into the lead passages beneath the floor,'is subjected to'a very intenseheat. V V
'Vertical fines 13 are built upon the inner face of the kiln wall 5, and communicate at their lower ends with the alternate furnaces 9 of'each series. These flues open at their upper; ends a considerable distance above the floor 12 and adjacent to the arched dome of the kiln. Four chimneys 14: are also.
provided, said chimneys being arrangedin pairs between the two series of furnaces, and each chimney having two outlet fines with which openings in the kiln wall,indicated at 15, communicate, said openings being 10 cated adjacent to the top of the kiln. Each of the chimneys is provided with a suitable damper plate 16 whereby the outlet of the hot air from the interior of the furnace, may be cut off, when desired; The vertical body wall of the kiln is provided with a suitable door, indicated at 17, through which access may be conveniently had to the interiorthereof. It is, however, to be understood that, if desired, the inlet opening maybe formed in the dome of the kiln.
From the foregoing description, it is be-. vlieved that the manner of constructlon, as
well as the several advantages of my in.
proved kiln, will be fully and clearly understood. The proper fuel is placed in the sev eral furnaces and successively fired. The
heat and products of combustion are admitted from the pair of furnaces in each series into the lead passages beneath the kiln floor and then pass upwardly against the lower tiers of clay tile or brickarranged upon the kiln floor. The products of combustion from.
the damper plates 16 in the chimney flues,
to a greater or less extent. 7 In this manner, I reduce the consumption of fuel, and thus effect a material economy in the operation of the kiln, and also obtain better results in the burning of the tile or brick, and reduce the time of operation to a minimum. These several advantages obtained from my improved kiln structure, are of primary importance.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several features of my improved kiln, it will be understood that the same are susceptible of considerable modification and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is In a kiln, a solid base wall, a vertical body wall built thereon, a solid dome mounted on the bodywall, a plurality of spaced vertical walls built upon said base within the kiln and providing upwardly directing heat leads, each of said walls having a plurality of openings therein, said openings being an ranged in alinement to provide direct heat,
aassa 'es communicatin with the first heat leads, floor tile arranged upon the upper edge of said walls in spaced parallel IOWs and providing a multiplicity of openings communicating with the upwardly directing ends with the remaining furnaces, said fines,
opening into the kiln above the floor thereof and at a point adjacent the top of the body wall, a plurality of chimneys on opposite sides of the body wall of the kiln between the two series of furnaces and communicating with the interior of the kiln above said floor;
and a damper arranged within each of said chimneys for controlling the outlet of hot;
air from the interior of the furnace.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
