To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARN'nsT F. PLn'rT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Grass, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hog-Waterer, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a valve for a trough adapted to be employed in watering hogs and other animals.
The present invention aims to improve the construction of the valve whereby the ingress of water into the tank is controlled.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 show's'in side elevation a tank wherein the present invention is embodied; Fig. 2 is a top plan of the tank, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4: of Fig. 3, parts appearing in elevation.
In the drawings there is shown a tank 1 equipped at its top with an inwardly projecting flange 2. Extended transversely of the tank 1 are partitions 3 having outwardly projecting flanges 4.- connected with the side walls of the tank. The lower ends of the partitions 3 are spaced apart from the bottom of the tank as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The invention comprises a lid 5 the extremities 60f which rest on the flanges 2. The transverse edges of the lid 5 are bent downwardly to form flanges 7 engaging the outer faces of the partitions 3 at the upper edges thereof. Strips 8 eX- tend across the end portions 6 of the lid 5 in order to hold the lid in place, the strips 8 being secured to the flange 2 by means of detachable connecting elements 9. As thus constructed, the tank'is provided adjacent its ends with open receptacles 10 and is providedin its central portion with a compartment 12 closed at the top by the lid 5.
A water supply pipe 14; enters one side of the tank and terminates in an upstanding end 15 secured to the base plate 16 of a closure embodying a neck 17 threaded at 18 into the lower end of a casing 19. Into one end ofthe casing 19 is threaded a bushing 20 provided with a relatively large'bore 21 and equipped with a parti-spherical seat 22 at its lower end, the bushing 20 preferably being madeof brass. 1n the upper end of the bushing 20, radial notches 23 are formed. The notches 23 form outlets, and they also act as a screw-driver kerf whereby the bushing 20 may be manipulated. Further, because the notches 23 are located at the upper end of the bushing, the notches may be cleaned out readily.
The valve comprises a stem 26, a spherical valve head 27 adapted to cooperate with the seat 22, and a weight secured to the stem 26. This weight, which is denoted by the numeral 28, acts as a deflector, cooperating directly with the notches 23 in the upper end of the bushing 20. When the valve is elevated, the same maybe rocked to one side, so that the weight 28 will uncover partially the notches 23, thuspe-rmitting a cleaning of the same. The weight 28 is provided with an upstanding projection united by a pivot element 51 with a lever 52 fulcrumed at 53 on a bracket 54: secured to one of the partitions 3. The free extremity of the lever 52 is provided with a float 55.
In practical operation, as the water rises in the tank 1, the float 55 is lifted, tilting the lever 52 and thus elevating the valve structure, so that the spherical valve head 27 cooperates with the seat 22. Owing to the spherical form of the valve head 27 and to the spherical form of the'seat 22, these elements will always cooperate properly even though the stem 26 is not disposed in an exactly vertical position.
When water enters the casing 19 bv way of the pipe 14 and engages the weight 28, the latter acting as a deflector, directs the water outwardly through the notches 23. The weight 28 serves to hold the valve head 27 in an open position while the tank is filling and there is, therefore, no clattering movement of the valve head 27, the latter remaining in an open position until it is drawn to a closed one by the action of the float 55 and the lever 52.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In a device'of the class described, a casing; a bushing threaded into the casing and provided with a rounded seat with a bore communicating with the seat, the bushing being provided with a pair of oppositely disposed outlet openings, the openings being located in the upper edge of the bushing whereby the openings may be cleaned and whereby the openings may be used as a screw driver kerf; a valve structure including a rounded head cooperating with the seat and a stem movable transversely in the bore; a weight carried by the stem and adapted to rest on the bushing toact as a deflector for the openings; the head being mounted to rock in the seat and the stem being adapted to swing laterally in the bore, whereby the openings may be partially uncovered for cleaning when the valve struc-' EARNEST F.
