PAUL M. HOTCHKIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ELECTRIC-LIGHT SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed May 22, 1912. Serial No. 698,963.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, PAUL M. HOTCHKIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Light Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has relation to a terminal fitting for installing electric lights in fixtures, and the object of my invention is the provision of a fitting which may be employed in conjunction with a large variety of fixtures.
I attain the object by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention having a lamp socket installed therein and carrying a reflector bracket for holding the reflector in proper relation to said lamp; Fig. 2 is a fragmental partially sectional view centrally of a terminal fitting having a conduit receiving opening in its bottom wall; Fig. 3 is a lan of the open end or top of the terminal tting shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the closed end or bottom of the fitting shown in Fig. 1.
The terminal fitting comprises a metallic casing 5, substantially cylindrical in form, one end of which is turned outward and provided with extending ears 5*, which are provided in turn with the interiorly threaded screw holes 5. Into the cylindrical casing 5, is inserted a procelain or other insulating socket 6, which has an enlarged top portion provided with ears or lugs 6 coinciding with the ears 5 of the casing and bored to register with the screw holes 5 thereof.
In the sides and bottom of the casing, are openings 10 having integral extension collars 5 around the peripheries thereof.- The collars 5 are interiorly threaded as at 5 to receive the threaded ends (not shown) of any conduit plpes which it is desired to connect therewith and for which they provide secure attaching means.
To the face of the insulating socket 6, is removably attached a metallic cover 7, having laterally extending flanges 7, which are similar to and register with the flanges 5 upon the casing 5. A bolt, 7 ,passes through the registering holes in the respective flanges 5 6 and 7, securing the entire structure firmly together. The cover 7 has a central opening about which there is a laterally extending annular rim and to this rim, by means of the screws 8 or any other suitable means, is secured a reflector supportingare turned up to form lugs- 7 which are adapted to engage the head of the screw and hold the cover against accidental displacement until the screw has been loosened so as to avoid said lugs. A cutaway portion 7 is also provided adjacent each slot so that after the screw has been loosened somewhat and the cover revolved slightly, it may be readily removed by exerting a little force on the cover. This terminal fitting has provided in the bottom thereof an insulating pad 10, and in the collars 5 are set screws 5 to secure them to the tubular conduits commonly employed in connection with such work. Formed in the way described, this terminal socket can be used in connection with any form of installation which at present has been brought to my attention and with vertical or horizontal conduits. If only one of the connections 5 is needed, the others may be closed by suitable plugs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combination with an outlet box comprising a casing having laterally extending flanges, an insulating socket arranged in said casing, flanges integral with said socket alining with the flanges of said casing, a cover for the insulating socket conforming to the shape thereof, and means for clamp-
