and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
` This invention relates to improvements in faucets and more particularly to basin faucets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a faucet which may be readily detached and replaced without the use of tools, by an unskilled person, thereby providing for the change of washers when they become so worn as to cause leakage in the faucet.
Another object is to provide a faucet so connected with the coupling member that it may be quickly detached by imparting a onequarter turn thereto, vthereby especially adapting it for use on basin faucets which are usually so close to the back of the basin that they cannot be unscrewed until disconnecting the faucet under the basin and taking it out.
Another object is to provide asimply constructed faucet of this character which may be removed without necessitating cutting olf of the water.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a faucet and coupling constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central vertical section thereof showing the valves in closed position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the valves in open position; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the forward end of the coupling taken substantially on the line 4-41 of Fig. .7 Fig. 5 is a detail rear elevation of the faucet; Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a transverse section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a similar view taken on the line S8 of Fig. 1.

This coupling 1 1s exteriorly threaded at its rear .end and is provided at its front end on the interior thereof with ratchet grooves 3 which have notches l opening through the front end of the member 1 to provide for the connection of the faucet with the coupling in a manner to be described. This coupling is also provided on its inner face at a point about midway its ends with an annular threaded portion 5 having a shoulder 6 at the front end thereof with which one end of a tubular nipple 7 is arranged flush when mounted in said coupling. This nipple 7 is in the form of an exteriorly threaded sleeve designed for threaded engagement with the threaded portion 5 of the coupling, and the rear end of which is contracted and reduced to adapt it to form a seat for a valve 9 hereinafter to be described. This nipple 7 is shown provided on its inner face with a plurality of pairs of oppositely disposed longitudinally extending grooves 7 which are designed to receive a screw driver for positioning the nipple and engaging it with the threaded portion 5 of the coupling. The coupling 1 at the rear of the nipple 7 is provided with longitudinally extending corrugations 8 which provide for` the passage of the water between the sides of said nipple and of a valve 9 which is slidably mounted Vin said coupling between the nipple 7 and the rear end thereof, said coupling being providedwith laterally extending stops 10 to limit the rearward movement of said valve. This valve 9 is shown in the form of a cylindrical block having its rear end truncated cone-shaped as shown at 11 to receive the impact of the iniowing ywater and against which the water under pressure impinges and forces the valve forward into close engagement with the nipple 7 thereby cutting off the supply of water through said coupling, it being understood that the water pressure in the main will normally hold this valve in closed position, and that when the valve is opened, the water will flow freely between the side walls thereof and the grooves in the coupling member and pass through said nipple to the faucet con nected to the front end of the coupling 1. The front end of this valve 9 has a concave seat 12 which is designed to receive an operating member hereinafter to be described.
The faucet 2 is provided at its inner or rear end with a tubular extension 13 having an annular iiange or shoulder 14 spaced inwardly from its free end and which forms a limiting stop for the insertion of said eX- tension in the tubular coupling 1 and against which the front end of said coupling abuts when the parts are in assembled posi tion. This tubular extension 13 is provided on its periphery intermediately the length thereof with a plurality of laterally projecting lugs 15 arranged in circumferential alinement and which are designed to enter the notches t of the coupling 1, and on giving the faucet a quarter turn, said lugs become locked with the walls of the ratchet groovesin said tubular coupling, three of said notches and grooves being shown in the coupling and three lugs on the faucet. These grooves as illustratedy are inclined downwardly and inwardly from their com-l municating notch to a point adjacent the nextsucceeding notch. By so forming these parts it will be obvious that a quarter turn only of the faucet is necessary `for either coupling or uncoupling it with the member 1, and this attachment is especially applicableto basin faucets for the reason above set forth.
This faucet2 is of ordinary construction, being provided with a cone-shaped valve 2O having a rubber washer 16 encircling it, and which is held in place by a threaded cap 17 having wings 17 to provide for its ready application and removal when it is desired to change the washers. This valve 2O is mounted on a stem 18, the front end of which has an eye 19 to receive an offset eX- tension21 formed onthe inner end of the valve opening shank or stem 22 which eX` tends laterally through one wall of the fau-` cet and is provided with the usual handle 23.
The stem 18 of the valve 20 projects beyond the rear end thereof and is designed to Vpass into the tubular coupling 1 and they nipple 7 with its free end positioned inthe concave seat 12 of valve 9 whereby it is cen tered, and on the turning of the handle 23 in the direction for opening said valve 9 so that when said valve 20 is opened, the stem thereof will forcibly engage the valve 9 Yand press it backward into the tubular coupling member away from its seat on the nipple 7 and thus permit the water to flow freely through the faucet. f
When it is desired to cut off the water, the handle 23 is turned in the opposite direction, thereby drawing the washer covered valve 20 in close engagement with the seat Copies of thisrpatent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the at the end of the faucet and thereby cutting off the water `from the faucet. Thisfclosing Another advantage resulting from the use` of this improved faucet yis that it may beV used as a draw-off cock on hot water boilers so that when it is desired Vto change the washers thereon it will notbe'necessary to empty the whole system or boiler, the faucet being readily detachable without cutting oft' the water in the manner above described.
