Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. BEAITY, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SARAH J. BEATTY, J OSIAH B. POOR, AND WILLIAM MGKEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUCKER-ROD JOINTS OR COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,371, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. BEATTY, of Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sucker-Rod Joint or Goupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
rIhe nature of my invention consists of a sucker-rod joint or coupling, with the inner surface of its straps provided with projections adapted to recesses made in the sucker-rods.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
The accompanying drawing which forms part of my speciiication is a vertical and longitudinal section ofthe male part of the coupling-joint and a section of the sucker-rod or pole.
A represents the screw of the coupling. B represents the straps. C represents projections on the inner surface of the straps. I) represents the rivets. E represents the sucker-rod or coupling-pole, which is provided with recesses or notches which, in form, correspond in vsize and shape to the projections O on the interior of the straps B. The coupling-joint herein described is constructed in all respects in the ordinary form, excepting the projections O on the interior ofthe straps B.
The cheapest method of constructing the hereinbefore-described coupling is casting it of castiron and subsequently annealing it, thereby forming a coupling of malleable iron. The advantage of constructing a coupling or joint for sucker-rods in the manner herein described consists in relievingthe rivets from transverse strain, giving more metal for the heads of rivets, and holding the rod E more securely in its place.
The advantage of a safe and sure means for securing the sucker or pole to the coupling-joint is a desideratum with operators of oil-wells, for insecure attachments in the sucker-rod are always a very great source of annoyance.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and advantages of my improvement, what I claim as my invention isrIhe straps B provided with projections O, in combination with rivets D and recesses in the rod E, constructed and arranged as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES H. BEATTY.
