Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENNO VOM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Fastenors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates, generally, to improvements in fasteners for bag-frames; and, this invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel spring-controlled looking catch or fastener for the hinged sections of bag-frames of the various kinds, and which is in the nature of an improvement on the bag-frame catch for which I have made an application for Letters-Patent, filed December 24, 1914, Serial Number 878,862, and allowed March 4, 1915.

The present invention has for its principal object to provide a neat and simply-constructed bag-frame fastener or catch of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth, the parts of which have been reduced to a minimum, are easily assembled in their operative relation, and are positive in their closing action for retaining the hinged or pivoted frame-sections in their closed relation.

The invention has for its further object to provide a bag-frame fastener or catch, the parts of which can not readily get out of order, and are readily manipulated, comprising a pivotally disposed knob or fingerpiece which is adapted to be secured directly upon the upper portion of one of the frame sections, the knob or fingerpiece being in the form of a hollow element into which projects a post fixed to said frame-section and which is provided with a coiled spring coacting with said. post, said spring having an elongated and forwardly extending coil, in the form of a loop, in positive bearing-contact with a portion of the said knob or fingerpiece, for normally retaining the parts 1n their relative positions for maintaining the closed relation of said frame-sections, but permitting the pivotal movement of said knob, and also acting to return the knob or fingerpiece to its normal position after manipulation.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in View, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame fastener or catch hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in detail in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the framesections of a bag-frame in their closed relation, with a bag-frame fastener or catch representing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, the fastener or catch being also shown in elevation; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional representation of th hinged or pivoted bagframe sections, in an open relation, with the bag-frame fastener or catch shown in side elevation in its pivotally mounted position upon one of said frame-sections, said section of the frame-sections being repre sented as taken on line 22 in said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow as. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section, on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 33 in said Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section, taken on line H in said Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, taken on line 5- 5 in said Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of a cylindrical box-like element employed with the hollow knob or finger-piece, shown detached from said knob or fingerpiece; and Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 8 is a front view, and Fig. 9 aside elevation of the post employed with bag-frame fastener or catch, but shown detached from the frame-section.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said figures of the drawings, the reference- characters 1 and 2 indicate the usual bag frame-sections which are hinged or pivotally connected in any usual manner, as at 3. Suitably mounted upon the upper central portion of one of the said frame-sections, as 1, is a post l, said post b ing provided at its lower end-porti on with laterally extending members 5, providing a foot, and each member 5 having at its outer end-portion an upwardly'extending finger, as 6, said fingers forming with the respective lower edge-portions of the post suitable receiving spaces, as 7, substantially V as shown in Figs. 4- and 8, the purposes of which are self-evident. Extending downwardly from the said foot of the post are suitably-formed rivet-lugs or studs, as 8, which project through suitably disposed holes or perforations with which the frame section 1 is provided, and which rivet-lugs or studs are upset or riveted upon the lower surface portion of said frame-section,'for rigidly securing the said post 4; in its fixed position upon said frame-section 1, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. In its upper end-portion the said post 4 is usually slitted as at 9, to provide a pair of oppositely projecting fingers, as 10, as shown more particularly in Figs. 4; and 5 of the drawings. Mounted above the said framesection 1 is a cylindrical box-like element comprising a base 11, bounded by an annular bead-like flange 12 and an upwardly extending wall 13. The said base 11 is made with a laterally extending opening, as 14, and a communicating open portion 15. The assembled arrangement of said box-like element with relation to the frame-section 1 is such, that the previously-mentioned rigidly fixed post 4 extends into and through the laterally extending opening 14 of the said base 11, and above said base into the chambered portion formed by the wall 13, and,

furthermore, that one-half of said box-like member will extend beyond the edge-portion 16 of the frame-section 1, and will lap over upon the other frame-section 2, when the latter is closed against the said framesaid lock-stud or projection 17. gage the base 11 from its holding engageof said post, and having its lower portion arranged in the receiving spaces 7 and bearing'forcibly upon the upper edge of the foot 5, the lower coil of the said spring being made in the form of an elongated and forwardly extending loop, as 20, which is of such length that it forcibly bears down uponthe inner upper surface-portion of the said base 11, back of the boundingedge-portion 18, in the manner substantially as illustrated in said Figs. 3 and5 of the drawings.

Suitably mounted upon the wall 13 of the box-like member, with its lower marginal edge resting upon the annular bead 12, by belng pressed over SZHClWZIll and held by friction, or otherwise secured in its posltion, is a hollow knob, as 21, which may beof anv desired ornamental configuration and which provides the fingerpiece of the bag 7 frame fastener or catch.

Normally, the spring 19 and its loop 20 retain the complete bag-frame fastener or catch thus provided, with relation to the closed frame- sections 1 and 2, in the position indicated in said'Fig. 3 of the drawings, with the lock-stud or projection 17 in its holding or retaining engagement with the bounding edge-portion 18 of the base 11, as above stated, the lock-stud or projection 17 having a tapering or rounded edge-portion, as 22, which allows the base 11, when the frame-sections are being closed, to ride upon and over said edge-portion 22, and the combined action of the spring 19 and its loop 20 causing the base 11 to be snapped into locked or holding engagement with the To disenment with said lock-stud or projection, so as to permit the hinged. or pivoted framesectio- ns 1 and 2 to be brought into their separated or open relation, a slight pressure upon the portion 23 of the knob 21,will bring the latter into the tilted position, indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that, the two frame- sections 1 and 2 may be readily brought into anopen or separated relation, the resilient spring-like action of the'loop 20 allowing for the pivotal movement of the base 11 and incidentlyof the entire .boxlike element and of the knob 21, without displacement of said box-like element and knob from its operative position upon the upper surface of the frame-section 1.

After the knob 21 has been tilted, and

upon the removal of further pressure upon the portion 23 of the knob, the compressed coils of the spring 19 and the angular-1y raised elongated loop 20 thereof, in assuming tneir normal initial positions, will return the raised or tilted knob, and the various parts connected therewith, again to their normal positions so that the separated or opened frame-sections, when closed, are again snapped into locked engagement with the bag-frame fastener or catch.

Of course I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoin specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various (lGXlCQS and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim 2-- 1. A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post rigidly secured to and extending upwardly from one of the framesections of a bag-frame into said hollow knob, a spring encircling said post, and a loop-shaped elongated coil connected with and extending from a portion of said spring in engagement with said knob for retaining said knob in its pivotal relation upon said frame-section.

2. A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post rigidly secured to and extending upwardly from one of the framesections of a bag-frame into said hollow knob, said post comprising a lower foot and fingers extending upwardly from said foot, said fingers with portions of the post pro viding receiving spaces, a spring encircling said post, said spring having its lower endportion resting in said receiving spaces and upon said foot, and means connected with and extending from. said lower portion of said spring in engagement with said knob for retaining said knob in its pivotal relation upon said frame-section.

3. A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post rigidly secured to and extending upwardly from one of the frame sections of a bag-frame into said hollow knob, said post comprising a lower foot and fingers extending upwardly from said foot, said fingers with portions of the post providing receiving spaces, a spring encircling said post, said spring having its lower endportion resting in said receiving spaces and upon said foot, and a loop-shaped elongated coil connected with and extending from said lower portion of said spring in engagement with said knob for retaining said knob in its pivotal relation upon said framesection.

A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post rigidly secured to and extending upwardly from one of the framesections of a bag-frame into said hollow knob, a cylindrical box-like element connected with said knob, said element comprising a base having an opening through which said post projects, a spring encircling said post, and means connected with and extending from a portion of said spring and in bearing contact with the base of said boxlike element for retaining said element and said knob in pivotal relation upon said frame-section.

5. A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post rigidly secured to and extending upwardly from one of the framesections of a bag-frame into said hollow knob, a cylindrical box-like element connected with said knob, said element comprising a base having an opening through which said post projects, a spring encircling said post, and a loop-shaped elon gated coil connected with and extending from a portion of said spring and in hearing contact with the base of said box-like element for retaining said element and said knob in pivotal relation upon said framesection.

6. A bag-frame fastener comprising a hollow knob, a post rigidly secured to and extending upwardly from one of the framesections of a bag-frame into said hollow knob, said post comprising a lower foot and fingers extending upwardly from said foot, said fingers with portions of the post providing receiving spaces, a cylindrical boxlike element connected with said knob, said element comprising a base having an opening through which said post projects, a spring encircling said post, said spring having its lower end-portion resting in said receiving spaces and upon said foot, and means connected with and extending from said lower portion of said spring and in bearing contact with the base of said boxlike element for retaining said element and said knob in pivotal relation upon said frame-section.
