Application filed September 28, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAN TEozo, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Aeroplanes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in aeroplanes.
The primary object of the invention s the provision of an aeroplane of the b1- plane type and adaptable for use as a helicopter arranged for navigatlng the air.
A further object of the device is to provide an airship having shiftable planes arranged for vertical alinement during the employment of an elevating propeller but readily shiftable horizontally as sustainlng planes during the operation of a forward propelling means.
A still further object of the device is the provision of a motor-driven air craft having opposite pairs of laterally arranged planes. all of the same being simultaneously shiftable by the aeronaut under control of a single hand device.
With these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of partshereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the forward portion of the device with members removed and the side planes in vertical alinement, and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a side portion of the device illustrating the plane shifting mechanism.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, a central frame-work or inclosure 10 is provided having opposite supporting runners 11 adapted to rest upon the ground when the device is not in operation and having forwardly projecting pointed portions 12.
An elevating propeller 13 is secured above the frame 10 upon a centrally arranged shaft 14 which is journaled in bearings 15 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 29, 1916.

of the said frame and is provided with any desired form of gear connections 16 with the operating motor 17, a lever 18 being arranged for manipulating a suitable clutch 19, whereby the propeller 13 may be accurately controlled. A propeller 20 is arranged forwardly of the frame 10 and between the runner points 12 and is operatively connected to the motor 17 by means of a suitable clutch 21 and arranged under the control of the operator of the aeroplane by means of a controlling lever 22.
A rearwardly extending frame 23 provides .a suitable tail for the device having upper and lower stationary planes 24 arranged thereon while a rudder 25 is pivoted to the rear end'of the tail and is controlled by means of a steering cord 26 whereby the aeroplane is accurately steered and the direction thereof controlled.
Oppositely arranged laterally projecting frames or brackets 27 are carried by the aforementioned central main frame 10, each of the said brackets 27 having centrally arranged shafts 28 longitudinally arranged centrally of the top and bottom thereof, the upper and lower shafts of each of the frames 27 being arranged in parallelism.
Each shaft 28 is provided with an operating arm 29 positioned within the central frame 10 while a normally vertical link 30 connects the free ends of each pair of arms 29. A horizontal rod 31 is secured between the pivotal connection of the upper arm 29 and the links 30 and is provided with an operating lever 32 while a hand lever 33 in the form of a rocker arm is pivoted as at 34 to a segment rack 35 and the lower end of said lever 32 is pivoted to the free end of the short arm 36 of the said hand lever 33.
It being noted that each of the shafts 28 is provided with a similar rectangular plane 37, the operation of the complete device will be apparent, the planes 37 being normally arranged in vertical alinement when the aeroplane is positioned at rest as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings. With the planes 37 so positioned, the lever 18 will operatively connect the motor 17 with the shaft 14 of the elevating propeller 13, whereupon the airship will be elevated substantially vertically after the manner of a helicopter, the planes 24 of the tail portion of the device being adapted to offset the weight of the forwardly arranged mechanism so as to properly balance the same. When the desired elevation is reached, and at which it is desired to navigate the airship, the elevating propeller 13 will be stopped and the planes 37 shifted horizontally and thereupon the forward propeller 20 will be thrown into operation by the lever 22 and the device arranged as illustrated in Fig. 2 will be ready to navigate the air, the course thereof being guided by the rudder 25. Vith the planes 37 positioned vertically as illustrated in Fig. 5, it will be seen that a rearward movement of the hand lever 33 will elevate the lever 32 as Well as the links 30, thus tilting the planes 37 as may be desirable or in parallel arrangement horizontally. A spring-pressed catch 33 may be arranged upon the hand lever 33 for engaging the teeth 38 of the rack 35 for maintaining the hand lever 33 in its adjusted positions and with the planes 37 in desirable positions. It will thus be evident that by manipulating the said hand lever 33, all of the four lateral planes 37 are simultaneously adjusted as may be found desirable While the position of all of the same is vertical during the rise and fall of the airship but may be horizontal on approaching that position when employed as sustaining wings during the travel of the device through the air, it being understood that the same may be assisted in steering by tilting said planes 37.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is What is believed to Y be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is An aeroplane comprising a centrally arranged frame, side brackets oppositely carried by the said frame, pairs of parallel shafts journaled centrally of the top and bottom of each of the said brackets, the said shafts of the separate brackets being in axial alinement with each other, each of the said shafts having an operating arm, connecting links pivoted between the free ends of the said arms of each bracket, a rod extending between the brackets and connected at its ends to the joint of the upper arms and the upper ends of the links, a toothed rack Within the said frame, an angular hand lever pivoted to the said rack, a pivoted lever connecting the lower short arm of the said hand lever with the said connecting rod, and an engaging catch for the teeth of the said rack carried by the said hand lever.
