OIGrind-BAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed December 9, 1912, Serial No. 735,873. Renewed May 4, 1915. Serial No. 25,841.
,1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. EDwAnDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Cigar-Band, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar bands; and has for its object to provide a cigar band which can be wrapped around a cigar very tightly whereby removal of the same cannot be effected without destroying the band, and in order to effect this object I have provided special means for rupturing, or removing the band when desired by the smoker.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1, is a plan view of a cigar band constructed in accordance with my invention, ready to be placed around a cigar; and, Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same formed into a ring, with the ends connected together.
In the drawing I have shown a cigar band comprising a body 1, having space for the usual display advertising, or trade mark,
and provided with ends 2, and 3, which are provided with paste, or adhesive material, to which may be attached a strip 4, of silk, or any desired material, in a manner where by one end of the strip 4, is left free to be grasped by the fingers to rupture the band for the purpose of removing the same from thecigar while the other end of the strip 4, is held between the ends 2, and 3, whereby the band is secured around the cigar, as will be understood.
It is common to mount the cigar bands loosely on the cigars so that they can be easily slipped off the end before starting to smoke the same. This has led to the counterfeiting of choice cigars by removing the labels from them, or gathering up labels, or bands that have been slipped from them by smokers, and placing these bands on cigars of an inferior grade. With my device the bands are secured so tightly around the cigars that they cannot be slipped off;
but with ordinary bands this would make the bands diflicult to remove without injuring the cigars. With my improved device, however, the band can be easily torn apart, and removed. This will render the band unfit for further use; and counterfeiting is prevented.
I may further guard against the bands being slipped off the cigars without rupturing by crimping one edge of the band, as shown at 5. This will cause the edge to engage the cigar in a way to cause slipping along the same more diflicult, and increases the necessity of tearing the band before removing.
By having the piece 4, the bands are easily removed from the cigars without injury to the latter; and the removal of the band is even easier than with bands adapted to be slipped off one end.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A cigar band provided with ends, one of which is provided with paste on the bottom side thereof and the other with paste on the top thereof whereby said ends are adapted to be secured together, and a strip of material having one end secured to the paste of one end in a manner whereby when said ends are secured together said strip will have one end between said pasted ends and the other end free, for the purpose set forth.
2. A cigar band having ends constructed to be secured together around a cigar and having an edge adapted to engage the cigar in a manner whereby sliding is prevented, and means to rupture the connection between said ends when secured together around a cigar, as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, this fifteenth day of October, A. D. 1912.
CHARLES E. EDWARDS.
