FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb, 22, 1916.
Application filed October 28, 1913. Serial No. 797,754.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. SIsBowEn, a. citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and LOUIS E. Prrrro'vi, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, the fol lowing being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of our invention which we at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of our invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of one half of the-bed frame; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the complete bed frame; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed frame in its folded condition.
Referring to-the drawing, A, A are the side bars of the frame preferably formed of angle iron and they are permanently connected by transverse end bars of which one is shown at B in Fig. 1, it being understood that a similar end bar is provided at the opposite end, the bars aforesaid comprising a rigid rectangular frame on which is stretched a suitable metallic spring mattress fabric C. Each end-frame is formed of bent metal, preferably tubular, having an upper cross member and vertical downturned side members which at. their lower ends are each bent forward and jointed to the lower end of a bar F having its upper end jointed to the angle side bar A on the inside of the depending leg of the angle. Each side member of the end-frame is embraced by a sleeve on the vertical edge of a horizontal offset hinge-arm D jointed to the side bar A at the point (Z which coincides with the pivotal point of the afore said bar F. A leg J, having a caster L at its lower end and a second caster K midway of its inner edge, is also pivoted to the side bar A at the point 7' and a brace bar therefor, H, is attached at its lower end to cross rod 0 and at its upper end is pivoted to the side bar A at the point h, being also con nected to the bar F aforesaid by the link G. in the open condition of the bed, on the upper edge of a latchon the pivotal point (2.
plate P on leg J, and a spring M draws the leg J toward the end of the bed, while a cross bar R connects the two opposite legs J at each end of the bed.
To fold the bed, it is only necessary to push the upper part of each end frame E inward, at the same time putting the foot against cross bar R, or one of the casters L, to hold leg-J. The inward push on the frame E draws rod 0 out of engagement with latch plate P, the said frame turning The bed then sinks down flat on the floor as shown in Fig. 3 resting on casters K so that it can be moved about as may be desired. Conversely, to open the bed, it is only necessary to turn each end frame outward, when the rod 0 will act to unfold legs J from the mattressfabric frame and finally drop into latching position above the latch-plates P.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress fabric frame, of legs pivoted thereto, latch abutments on said legs, an end frame pivoted to said mattress fabric frame, and means operated by said end frame for engaging said abutments to retain said legs in supporting position.
v 2. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress-fabric frame, of folding legs therefor, a spring for operating said legs, a latching brace for said legs, and an endframe pivoted on said mattress-fabric frame and controlling said latching-brace.
3. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress fabric frame, of legs pivoted thereto, latch abutments carried by said legs, an end frame pivoted to said ma tress fabric frame, a latching brace also pivoted to said mattress frame and adapted to engage said abutments when said legs are in unfolded position, and connections between said latch-- ing brace and end frame for operating the same.
4:. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress frame, of legs pivoted thereto, end frames also pivoted thereto, latching mechanism pivoted to said mattress frame and cooperating with said legs to retain them in unfolded position, and connections between said end frame and latching mechanism for controlling the latter.
5. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress frame, of an end frame pivoted thereto, legs pivoted thereto separately from the end frame, springs for normally holding said legs in folded position, latching mechanism for holding said legs in unfolded position, and operating means for said latching mechanism controlled by the movement of said end frame.
6. In afolding bed, the combination with a mattress fabric frame, of an end frame pivotally supported by said mattress fabric frame and having a portion depending below the same, folding legs attached to said mattress fabric frame, and an operating mechanism for said legs movable independently thereof and connected with the depending portion of said end frame.
' 7. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress-fabric frame of legs pivotally attached thereto, a latch brace for said legs also pivotally attached to said frame and movable independently of said legs, and an end frame separately pivoted to the mattress fabric frame and controlling said latchbrace.
8. In a folding bed, the combination with a mattress-fabric frame of an end-frame pivoted thereto on offset hinges and extending below it, a bar F also pivoted to said mattress-fabric frame and to the extension of said end-frame, legs pivoted on said mattress-fabric frame, a latching brace H, connected to said bar F, and a spring for operating said legs.
9. In a folding bed, a mattress frame, legs pivoted to said frame, a latching brace pivoted to said frame and engaging said legs to retain them in open position, an end frame pivoted to said mattress frame, a link pivoted to said mattress frame, and to the lower end of said end frame, and a connection between said link and said latching brace for disengaging the latter from said legs.
10. In a folding bed, a mattress frame,
pivoted to said mattress frame, and to the lower end of said end frame, a connection between said link and said latching brace for disengaging the latter from said legs,
and a spring for folding said legs when said latching brace is disengaged therefrom.
11. In a folding bed, a mattress frame, legs pivoted to said frame, a latching brace pivoted to said frame and engaging the legs to hold the latter in unfolded position, an end frame pivoted to said mattress frame, a link pivoted to said mattress frame coincidentally with said end frame and also pivoted to the end of said end frame, and a link extending between said first named link and said latching brace whereby the latter will be disengaged from said leg when said end frame is folded.
12. In a folding bed, a mattress frame, legs pivoted to said frame, a latching brace pivoted to said frame and engaging the legs to hold the latter in unfolded position, an end frame pivoted to said mattress frame, a link pivoted to said mattress frame coincidentally with said end frame and also pivoted to the end of said end frame, a link extending between said first named link and said latching brace whereby the latter will be disengaged from said leg when said end frame is folded, and a spring for folding said legs when said latch brace is disengaged therefrom.
In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands, before two subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of October, 1913.
