ALFRED A. TURNAGE, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
JEWELERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916-.
Application filed July 29, 1915. Serial No. 42,597.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. TURNAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelers Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same.
My invention relates broadly to improvements in tools, the subject matter of the present application being designed, however, for the use of jewelers and watchmakers. the device being so constructed as to provide a number of so called bench keys of various sizes, confined normally within a magazine, but capable of projection therefrom for the winding of watch movements of various designs.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool which although being extremely simple and therefore inexpensive, will be highly efficient and durable and will possess a number of advantageous characteristics.
\Vith this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of a tool constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section thereof showing one tool shank retracted and confined in the magazine; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the same shank projected; Fig. 4 is a transverse section as seen along the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a similar view as seen along the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 3;I ig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the tool shanks and parts carried thereby.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a tubular magazine having at one end a chuck member 2 provided with a poly? sided central opening 3. The portion of the magazine 1 adjacent the chuck member 2, is provided with a plurality of longitudiopenings o are formed through the magazine. The walls of the openings 5 constitute stop shoulders for engagement by stop members yet to be described.
Confined in the magazine 1 to be independently projected from onenend thereof, 1s a plurality of tool shanks 6 which are positioned eeeentrically and held in contact with the wall of said magazine, by the spring arms 7 which are integrally joined at their rear ends to the rear ends of said shanks, the front ends of said arms being bent laterally as disclosed at 8 to provide studs projecting through the several slots 1. The studs 8 pass through openings in leaf springs 9 and are either upset or provided with suitable nuts, the latter being shown in the present application. In the present embodiment of the invention, the springs 9 are shown as formed by striking the intermediate portions of a plurality of slide plates 10 outwardly, such plates being disposed over the slots 4 in sliding contact with the magazine 1. I
It is the intention of the invention to project any one of theshanks 6 through the poly-sided opening 3 in the chuck 2, and for so doing the inner end of said chuck is provided with a conical socket 11 into which the front ends of the several shanks project 1n spaced relation. It is from the apex of the socket 11, that the opening3 leads, it being thus evident that when one of the slides 10 is shifted in the proper direction, the shank 6 having connection with said slide Wlll be projected forwardly, during which movement the front end of such shank comes into contact with the inclined wall of the socket 11 and is thus gradually directed to the opening 3, the spring 7 allowing the shank 6 to move in this manner as clearly disclosed in Fig. 3. L
For looking the shanks 6 in projected position, stops 12 are formed on channelshaped members '13, the latter being dis posed astride on the front ends of the spring arms 7 and having openings through which the studs 8 project, the stops 12 being disposed for reception in the openings 5 when the shanks are projected, whereby retraction of the shank in use is. prevented until the spring 9 having connection with such shank is forced inwardly by the thumb of the user. W ien this is done, however, the spring arm 7 is forced inwardly, thus retr cting the stops 12 from the opening and allowing the shank to be again withdrawn by proper actuation of its slide.
The several shanks are of poly-sided formation conforming to the shape of the opening 3, whereby when once projected, all strain for preventing rotation of the shanks independently of the magazine, will be exerted on the chuck member rather than upon the spring arms 7. In the present embodiment of the invention, the several shanks 8 are shown as provided with rectan gular keys 1% which are used for the winding of watch movements and are comn only termed bench keys. These keys are of assorted sizes and in order that the proper key may be projected, the several slides 10 are inscribed with indicating characters as disclosed at 15, whereby he jeweler may ascertain at a glance which slide must be operated to project the necessary tool.
The end of the magazine opposite that provi led with the chuck 2, is shown in the present embodiment of the invention as equipped with an additional chuck 16 which preferably includes a pair of jaws I? forced together by spring pressure and capable of being released by proper actuation of a circular slide 18 which surrounds the magazine 1. t is to be understood that the derice 16 is mounted upon the magazine only for the sake of convenience and that the operation of the tool as previously described is affected in no manner by the presence of such device.
From th foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawit will be evident that although a very simple and inexpensive construction has been. provided, the device will be highly ellicient and durable and will possess a number of advantages.-
In the drawings, certain specific details of construction have been shown for a complishing probably the best results and in the preceding, such details have been described, but it will be evident that I need not be limited thereto otherwise than to that extent to which the appended claims restrict me. Furthermore, although the improved tool has been defined as constructed for use of jewelers and watchmakers, it will be evident that numerous other devices could be well provided in place of the keys 1%, and that the entire tool could well be made in such proportions as to accommodate such instruments as screw drivers, drills, etc.
