Be it known'th'at LFniNoIs M. SHEAFOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland Center, in the county of Richland and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices, particularly those adapted for sharpening harvesting knives without removing them from the cutter bar, and has for. its object to provide a simply constructed device of this character which can be very cheaply manufactured and yet one which will be extremely efficient in use.

Another object of my invention is to provide a sharpener having a frame carrying the abrading material, which material can be readily replaced when worn by similar material.

Vith these and other objects in view, my

invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, and shown in the drawingswherein:

In the embodiment illustrated it will be seen that I have provided a very simple sharpener comprising broadly a frame 1 having a block of abrading material 2 se cured therein.

The frame 1 comprises an elongated body 3 preferably rectangular in cross section which has its ends reduced to form hand grips at, and in one face thereof is formed a recess 5 which opens through the adjacent faces of the body and is adapted to receive therein the aforesaid block of sharpening or abra ding material molded or otherwise shaped to fit the recess 5. This block is somewhat'wider than the body 3 of the frame in order that the article to be sharpened may be more readily operated upon by my improved device. 7

The block 2 of sharpening material is provided with upright end walls 6 having transversely extending tongues 7 formed substantially across their center, said upright end walls 6 being adapted to abut the upright ends 8 of the recess 5. The tongues 7 are designed to be positioned in the transversely extending grooves 9 formed in the ends 8 as shown. Openings 10 are formed transversely through the body 3 of the frame from'the upper to the lower face thereof adjacent the grooves 9 for the reception of clamping bolts 11, the upper portions of the openings 10 being enlarged as shown at 12 to permit the heads 11 to enter and to bear against the tongues 7 The opposite or threaded ends of thebolts receive wing or other types of nuts 13 for clamping the block 2 in the frame. 7 From this description it will be seen that to remove the block, it is'simply necessary to loosen the nuts 13 and the sharpening material may be slipped out. 7 Y

With a sharpening device such as above described, harvester knives may readily be sharpened without removing them from the cutter bar and they may be sharpened with equal facility from their outer ends to their inner ends and the same bevel maintained throughout the length of the cutting edge. block of abrading material is so constructed as to allow it to be reversed when one side becomes worn, thus giving a much longer period of usefulness than could be had by using only one surface. Furthermore, blocks'of abrading material of difl erent degrees of hardness or coarseness may be provided and used interchangeably in the frame of this improved sharpener.

lVhile I have described the elements best adapted to perform the functions of my in vention, it is obvious that various changes in form, and proportion may be resorted to. Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of this invention.

Having thus described my invention What I claim is:

A sharpening device of the class described comprising an elongated body rectangular in cross section, its end being reduced to provide hand grips, said body having a rectangular recess formed in one of its faces and opening through the adjacent faces, said recess having upright end Walls, each of said Walls having a transversely extending groove formed therein, said body also having transverse openings extending therethrough at right angles to said grooves, the upper ends of said openings being enlarged and adapted to communicate with said nuts on the threadeo ends of said bolts for clamping said block in adjusted position in the body.
