i To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GENNARO DE BELLIs, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in M11- sical Charts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to musical charts and more particularly to'that'form of chart intended to be placed above the key board of a piano to enable the student to readily pick out the key corresponding to a given note.

The objects of my invention are to provlde a device of this character of pleasing appearance, and simple construction, which may be easily folded into small space for transportation, and which may be quickly set up on the piano without defacing or injuring the case. I have also arranged my chart in such a way that the same gives an accurate reproduction of a key board, the divisions or keys tallying exactly with the keys of the piano upon which it is placed and the notation thereon being so arranged that the student may readily find the key corresponding to the note on his or her music.

lVith these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts described in the following specification, more particularly pointed out in the claims, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device in position on a piano. Fig. 2 is a plan vlew of the device, the same being shown partly folded. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing in broken detail the bass portion of the device. Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing in broken detail the treble portion of the device. I

Referring to said drawings by numerals:The chart is formed of a convenient number of sections 1, formed of card board, celluloid, wood or other suitable material, the sections being flexibly joined in any convenient manner, but preferably by hinges 2. To the end sections are flexibly fastened strips 3, carrying on their lower ends the foot pieces 4, said foot pieces being preferably shod with rubber, felt or other suitable material to prevent scratching or defacement of the piano when the device is placed thereon.

To hold the device securely in an open position, when in use, any suitable means may be employed such as the clip 5 which is adapted to fit firmly over the edge of the device,at the joints thereof, and is provided with a slot 6 for'the reception of the hinge 2. When the device is folded into book form the same may besecured by any suitable catch such as the clip 7formed to fit snugly over the edge of the folded device, as shown most clearly in Fig. 5.

The surface or face of the device so formed, is divided by suitable lines 8 to represent the key board of a piano and across the keys so represented is drawn the musical staff and, where necessary, the leger lines above or below the same, as the case may be.

On each key is placed the note struck by i said key and also the letter and name of said note.

It will be noted that the letters, used in notation in instrumental music, are placed below the staff in the bass while the syllabic notation is placed above the staff, while in the treble the position is reversed, the letters being placed above the staff and the syllabic equivalents below; thus giving a ready and positive indication of the change of clef.

By reference to Figs. 3 and 4:, it will be noted that the staff and leger lines, where necessary, are shown on each key and the note corresponding to said key also placed thereon so that one may readily locate said note on the music which is being played. As.

It will also be noted that the black keys, which are used to strike either sharps or flats, are provided with double notation to indicate the note of which said key will strike the sharp and also of what note it will strike the fiat.

The device is folded into book form, as shown in Fig. 5, when not in use. WVhen to be used the clips 7 are removed and the sections unfolded, the clips 5 are placed in position at the joints the ends 3 bent at right angles to the sections 1 and the device placed upon the piano, above the key board, as

shown most clearly in Fig. 1.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A musical chart comprising boards having hinged connection, and adapted to be supported in a vertical position above the keys of a piano, said boards having on their front faces lines indicating the facsimile of a piano key board registering with the key board of the piano on which the chart is supported, and a musical. staff extending across the outer portion of the White keys, and two separate stares across the black keys, every representation of a key on the chart bearing a note located onthe proper degree of the staff, one staff on the black keys bearing the appropriate sharp signs, the other staff bearing the corresponding fiat signs, substantially as described.

2. A musical chart comprising boards having hinged connection, and adapted to be supported in a vertical position above the keys of a piano, said boards having on their front faces lines indicating the facsimile of a piano key board registering with the key board of the piano on which the chart is supported, and a musical staff extending across the outer portion of the white keys, and two separate stares across the black keys, every representation of a key on the chart bearing a note located on the proper degree of the staff, one staff on the black keys bearing the appropriate sharp signs, the other staff bearing the corresponding flat signs, all of said staves having a syllabic notation and alphabetical notations, substantially as described.
