To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PARK G. PAIGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Sherman and State of Nebraska. have invented a new and useful Sn w-Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines designed for removing snow from roads, one ofthe objects of the invention being to provide a machine of this character having improved means for adjusting the'road engaging blades both vertically and angularly.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combiview ofthe machine designed for use as a snow plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlar ed vertical transverse section on line AB Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of-the adjustable head of the machine, the blades beingflremoved therefrom.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a beam provided at one end with cross head 2 provided with braces 3 whereby it is held against movement relative to the beam 1, this cross head 2 being provided with casters 1- connected to the end portions thereof. Each caster has an outstanding ear 5 adapted to receive a locking pin 6 slidably mounted within supporting brackets 7 extending from the cross head. When the locking pin is in engagement with the ear 5, the caster 4 is held against free rotation relative to the head but, when the pin 6 is removed, said caster can rotate freely.

swingletrees 12. The two whifiletrees are located beyond opposite sides of the beam 1 so that by means of the draft mechanism described, four horses can be used, two at each side of the beam 1.
Another clevis 13 is secured to the beam 1 at a point removed from the clevis Sand is engaged by a lever 14 to which are secured neck yokes 15. It is to be understood that with the draft mechanism arranged as shown and described, the casters will be located at the rear end of the machine. Howeventhe levers 9 and 14 can be interchanged so that the swingletrees 12 will be in the positions occupied by the neck yokes 15 in Fig. 1, while said neck yokes will be in the positions occupied by the swingletrees in said figure. With the parts thus rearranged, the casters 1 will beat the front end of the machine. This last arrangement is especially designed for use where the machine is used as a road drag, while the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided where the machine is. to be usedas asnow plow.
Arranged at that end of the beam 1 remote from the crosshead 2 is a cross head 16 provided at its ends-with knuckles 17 to which are connected the wheels 18. Arms 19 extend from the knuckles and are connected by a cross rod 20, this rod 20 being adapted to be operated in any suitable manner, as by means of a link 21 connecting it to a disk 22 adapted to be rotated by the steering wheel 23 which is mounted on the same shaft 24 with the disk 22.
Extending forwardly from the head 16 are brackets 25 having the ends of a cross rod 26 secured therein. A lever 27 is fulcrumed on the head 16 and has forwardly extending arms 28 movable therewith. these arms being formed with longitudinal slots 29. Lever 27 is connected by a rod 30 to an actuating lever 31 which may be provided with. any suitable means, such as a pawl and segment mechanism indicated generally at 32, for holding it in any position to which it may be adjusted.
An adjustable head shown in detail in Fig. 4, is adapted to be carried by the cross head 16. This adjustable head includes upstanding members 33 having longitudinal slots 3st in their lower end portions through which the rod 26 extends. These upstanding members are connected by a rod 35 which extends through the slots 29 in the arms 28.
Secured to the upstanding members 33 of the adjustable head are upper and lower cross beams 36 and 37 respectively, secured to upstanding side strips 38, the upper beam 36 being likewise secured to longitudinal side beams 39 which come together at 0pposite sides of a block 40, these blades coming together to form a point below and in advance of the beams 39. The beams 39 and side strips 38are adapted to be secured to the back faces of large blades 41 constituting the shares of the snow plow and which are preferably formed of heavy sheet metal.
A red 42 is pivotallv connected to the middle portion of the cross beam 36 and to a controlling lever 43 which is similar to the lever 31 and is adapted to be locked in the same manner in any position to which it may be adjusted.
In using the machine, the draft animals are hitched to the trees 12 while said trees are in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and when they are driven forward the plow will be in front of them and will clear a path through the snow. By means of lever 31 the plow can be raised and lowered relative to the beam 1, it being obvious that a rearward pull upon lever 27 will result in the elevation of arms 28 and, consequently, the elevation of the head shown in Fig. 5, the members 33 moving upwardly upon the guide rod 26. Then the head is in any position to which it may be adjusted vertically,
it can be adjusted angularly by means of lever 43 which, when shifted, will cause the rod l2to swing the head about the rod 26, this movement being permissible-in view of the factthat arms 28have the slots 29 there in within which rod 85 can slide.
While the machine is in use the casters 4 are locked against rotation about their vertical axes by the pins 6 and the machine is steered by means of the wheel having upstanding members slidably and pivotally mounted on said guide, road engaging blades carried by the adjustable head and converging to a point, means for swinging said adjustable head about the guide, a lever, a sliding and pivotal connection between said lever and the adjustable head,
and means for actuating the lever to raise and lower the adjustable head relative to the head upon the beam.
