Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ARM-- STRONG, a citizen of the United States, re-

Furthermore, it is an object of my invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the admixture of the liquids discharged simultaneously may be regulated as the requirements of practice may dictate.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved valve whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the valve being adjusted into a second position whereby both hot and cold water is adapted to be discharged,the operating handle being partly in elevation and forth as adapted for use in connection with hot and cold water, although I do not wish to be limited in this respect, as the same may Specification of Letters Patent.

As herein embodied, 1 denotes the casing of myimproved valve having one face open while the opposite face thereof is provided with the restricted discharge opening 2, the inner wall whereof being threaded in order to be suitably engaged by the retaining ring 3 whereby the detachable nozzle or hose connection 4 may be readily maintained in operative position.
As herein embodied, the interior side wall of the casing is cylindrical in form and is disposed on an inward incline and adapted tocoact with a correspondingly formed wall of the valve 5, said valve being provided in its under surface with the axially disposed recess 6 in communication with the laterally disposed induction ports 7 and 8, disposed in the same plane transversely of the valve herein disclosed as of quadrant-formation,
adapted to be brought into register with the diametrically opposed ports 9 and 10 in the casing 1 and each in suitable communication with a source of supply. The port 9 is adapted to lead from a source of cold water while the port 10 from a source of hot water.
The valve 5 is provided with the upstanding stem 11 preferably formed inte rally therewith and which is adapted to extend above the casing 1 and is disposed through the bushing 12 detachably engaged with the cap 14: which cap is in threaded engagement with the adjacent peripheral portion of the casing 1 and normally held against release by the set screw 15. It is to be observed that the bushing 12 is applied in operative position by being directed through the cap 14 from the inner side thereof and in threaded engagement therewith. In order to maintain the sleeve or bushing 12 against axial rotation, I find it of advantage to employ the set screw 16 operating in a manner which is self-evident. I also find :it of advantage to provide the lower extremity of the bushing 12 with the laterally disposed annular flange 17 adapted to be received within a suitable recess 18 formed at the axial center of the can 14.
To the upper extremity of the stem 11 is afiixed the operating handle 18, one extremity whereof being formed into the index or pointer 19 curved inwardly toward the cap 14 and terminating in close proximity thereto and adapted to coact with the inclications 20 produced on the outer face of the cap whereby it may be readily determined in What position or adjustment the valve I 5 is set.
as is believed to be clearly apparent in the accompanying drawings, it Will be seen" that the major portions of the inductioif ports 7 and 8 of the valve are disposed at the same side of the axial center of the; valve 5 and so related that upon one adjustment of the handle 18, the ports 9 and 10 will be closed and that upon other adjustments each of the ports 9 or :10 may be open one independently of theother or simultaneously, andit Willbe clearly apparent that in order to control the admixture of the different liquids only the requisite-rotation of the valve 5 in the required direction is necessary. It is to be observed that the valve 5 is ground and that by this means the possibility of leakage issubstantially obviated and in orderto compensate for any Wear which may occur, I find it of advantage to have the lower face of the valve slightly separated from the adjacent face of the casing and to also have the discharge end of the recess 6 surrounded by the pointed annular extension 21 adapted to-be 7 received in a correspondingly formed recess '22' surrounding the inner end of the restricted opening 2. .The valve5 is of ahelght less than the depth of the interior of the casing l and in order to maintain the .valve in its seated position yet permitting the same sufficient yield to readily allow the requisite rotation thereof, I find it of advantage to employ the tension spring 23 interposed between the cap 14 and the top of the valve 5 and surrounding the stem 11 thereof, it being observed that the tension of the spring may be readily controlled by an axial rotation of the bushing or sleeve -12. I also find it of advantage to have the ports 7 and 8 of gradual increasing'width inwardly thereof, as indicated at 124, in

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a valve constructed in accordance With my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted fornuse by reason of the convenience and facilitywith which it may be assembled, and it will also be obviousthat my invention is susceptible of some change-and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I'donot wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement communication with the discharge opening of the casing and having laterally directed ports in communication With the recess at its inner end adapted to be brought into register with the induction ports of the casing, each of'said ports being of quadrant formation and gradually increasing in width from its outer end, said ports being positioned 1n the same plane transversely of V the valve, the said ports having their major portions disposed at the same side of a given diameter through the valve.
