Be 1t known that we, JOHN EGLEsToN Exnnns and CHARLES JENKINS ENDnRs, citizens of the United States, residing at Berry! ville. in the county of Clark and-State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Double and .Single Decks for Stock-Cars, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to stock cars and has for its objectthe-production of a simple and efficient adjustable deckfora. car which Y may be either held ina raised or llowered tions, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully describedl and claimed.

chain 10 passes. This sprocket chain Y10 also passes over a spring wheelwhich is operated by a hand wheel 11, and by operating the hand wheel 11 rotation may be iniparted to the shafts 2 and 3 through the medium of the chainlO. The hand wheel 11 is keyed to a shaft 12 and this shaft carries a ratchet wheel 13 which is engaged by a pawl 14 to prevent the rotation of the( shaft 12 in one direction. 1t, of course, should be understood that this dog or pawl 14 wmay be kickedl out` of engagement with the ratchet wheel 18 when'it is desired to operate the shaft'in the same direction fto which the teeth of the ratchet wheel 18 extend. The shaft 12 is braced by means of a substantially Urshaped bracketl as is clearly illustrated in F ig. 1. 15 is lformed integral with a circular plate 16, which plate is riveted or otherwise connected to the end of the car. Each of the shafts 2 and 3 is also provided with a square portion or shank 17 adjacent the sprocket wheel over lwhich the chain 10 passes, and a 18 is pivotally connected to the side of the car and is provided with a pair ofdownwardly extending arms 19, which arms are adaptedto fit over the square lshank 170i' the shafts 2 and 3 to hold the saine against rotation when the locking bar 18 is thrown in engagementtherewith. A strap 2O is pivotally connected to one of thedepending arms 19, and this strap lits over a depending eye 21 carried by the coperat-4 ing depending arm 19 for receivingf'a lock 22, whereby the locking bar 18 will be held against removal from the square `shank 17 of the shafts 2 and 3 by unauthorized persons.
The chains 8 pass from the winding shafts 2 and 3 over the spool-like rollers 23, which spool-like rollers are carried by the inner face of the car so as to constitute guides for causing the chains S to have a direct vertical lifting pull upon the respective sections of the deck of the car. The lower ends of the chains 8 'are connected to the side edges of the deck ofthe car by means of eyes or any other suitable or desired fastening means, and bracing chains 24 are also suspended from the central portion of the car and areconnected to the central portion of the deck of the car by means of eyes 25, as is clearly illustrated in Figs. land 2.

It will, therefore, be understood that the auxiliary section ,of the deck can not be lowered kwithout :first lowering the primary portion 30 ofthe deck.v` As l above stated the primary kand auxiliary deck sections are provided at their 'innerx endsand upon each side thereof with guiding' boltsl Y27, andfthesefguiding bolts are `provided with longitudinally extending grooves 4l in which work the retaining bolts 42 for holding the guiding bolts 27 in their correct position after once vhaving been set. These bolts 42 pass through the frame or angle irons which constitute the frame of the primary and auxiliary deck sections. The outer ends 43 of the bolts 27 are rounded so as to iit in the rounded channels 44 of the guiding channel plate 26. The bolts 27 Aof the primary and auxiliary deck sections travel in parallel channels formed iny the same channel plate 26 as above described and as clearly illustrated in Figs. l and 2.
Y The sliding bolts 29 are formed of a similar construction to that illustrated in Fig. l2 and above described, but these bolts 29 extend at an angle of approximately 45 de-` grees to the deck sections 30 and 8l so as to engage the corner plates 28 as illustrated in Fig. l. As is clearly illustrated in Figs. l and 7 a plurality of protector plates 44V are hinged upon eye bolts v45 and are adapted to overhang the edges ofthe primary and auxiliary portions of the deck to close up the space between the edge of the deck and the sides of the car, thereby preventing `the possibility of an animal getting its foot between the edge of the deck and the car and possibly breaking its limb. The eye bolts 45 t over the" rolled portions 46 formed integral with theV closure oriprotector' plates 44 as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 7, thereby constituting an leiiicient hinge therefor.
The protector plates 44 are hinged to the side of the car in between a pair of the longitudinally extending bars 47 constituting the sides and ends of the car, and these protector plates 44 are adapted to fold up between the pair of the bars 47 to facilitate the passing of the deck sections 30 and 3l by the same when being drawnup and also l when being lowered to `their desired position. To constitute an eicient closure across the end of the auxiliary section 3l and close the opening made by the door of the car a Y hinge closure plate 48 is employed which is l provided with a beveled edge 49 so as tg Y allow the Vprotector plate 48 to be swung back upon the floor of the auxiliary section 3l of the deck when it issoV desired. By f havingthe beveled edge 49 formed thereon no sharp corner will be produced to injure an animal which might come in contact therewith.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a quick and very efficient adjustable deck has been provided for a stock car, and that this deck may be at all times carried by the car and placed in the desired position at any time when the double deck may be clamped tightly within their channels so as to prevent either the lateral or u longitudinal swing of the deck sections.
