BOILER FOR PRODUCING SUPERI-IEATED STEAM.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY B. SPEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Boiler for Producing Superheated Steam, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvem-ents in boilers for producing super-heated steam, one object of the invention, being the provision of a boiler embodying a unique assemblage of the component parts, including means whereby water is admitted at a relatively high level into perforated tubes incased in other tubes of greater diameter, the latter being sufficiently heated to instantly produce steam at the initial introduction of the water, the steam being emitted at the lower end at substantially atmospheric or any desired pressure.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of ccnstruction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a boiler constructed according to and embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a hcrizcntal section taken on line 33 of Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4l-4 of Fig. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section talien on line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal section of one of the coil castings. Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical section of another coil casting.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the casing which is provided with the ash pit 2, and has a grate 4 which divides the same, as illustrated in Fig. 5, into the lower ash pit 2 and the combustion chamber 5, the ash pit being provided with the clean out door 3 while the combustion chamber is provided with the two inlet dorrs 6. A chimney or flue 7 is provided as is usual.
Disposed within the combustion chamber 5 is a steam generating coil. embodying castings 8 partially embedded in the opposite Specification of Letters Patent.

side walls of the casing to be supported thereby. The castings 8 are arranged in vertical series, there being a number of se ries at each side of the casing, and the castings at the opposite sides being opposed to each other or in alinement. Disposed between and connected to the opposite castings 80f each pair are four horizontal or transverse pipe sections or tubes 9, which are spaced vertically and horizontally. The right hand castings 8, as seen in Figs. 3 and 5 are provided with U-shaped passages 8", as seen in Fig. 6, connecting the adjacent ends of the respective pipe sections 9 which are disposed in the same horizontal planes. The castings 8 at the left hand side, as seen in Figs. 3 and 5, are connected by longitudinal or horizontal pipe sections 9, which connect the pipe sections 9 in horizontal series, whereby the pipe sections 9 of each horlzontal set are connected in series by means of the passages 8 and pipe sect1ons 9 The rear vertical series of left hand castings 8 are provided with U-shaped passages 8 as seen in Fig. 7, connecting the respective rear pipe sections 9, and the forward vertical series of left hand castings 8 are connected bv vertical pipe sections 9 which connect the forward pipe sections 9. whereby the various horizontal sets of pipe sections are in turn connected in series.
The steam outlet pipe 10 is connected to the lower casting 8 which is disposed at the rear right hand corner of the steam generating coil, so as to communicate with the lower terminal of the coil, and an apertured water supply pipe 11 extends from the diagonally opposite upper casting 8 through the steam generating coil. Thus, the pipe or tube 11 extends from the upper casting 8 at the forward left hand corner of the steam coil, and extends through the upper set of pipe sections 9 and castings 8 first, thence through the second horizontal set, and so on down, following the course through the steam coil of the water and steam. The pipe 11 may extend either partially or entirely through the steam coil, and the lower end of the pipe 11 may terminate at a desired point.
The pipe 11 is connected at its upper end to a water feed pipe 12 having a suitable controlling valve 13, which may be controlled automatically by a suitable mechanism 14-, but since the details of the valve and controlling mechanism do not enter into the merits of the present invention, they need not be illustrated or described in detail.
The pipe sections 9 being disposed between the castings 8 hold the Said castings in place upon the walls of the casing, and the water pipe or tube 11 extends through the pipe sections 9, castings 8, and pipe sections 9 and 9" in the order that they are connected together. i
In operation, water is first admitted into the upper pipe sections 9, and will flow downwardly through the successive pipe sections 9. The pipe sections 9 being exposed to the rays of the heat or flame within the combustion chamber, will be quickly heated, for producing the steam, and the steam will be superheated within the lower pipe sections 9. Consequently, as the water and steam flow downwardly within the steam coil, the temperature thereof is increased rapidly, so that the steam can be quickly and effectively generated.
The present boiler is adapted especially for supplying superheated steam for use in extracting by-products of wood, impurities from cement, and the like, or where superheated steam of high temperature is desired.
What is claimed is:
In a boiler, a casing, series of'ca stings partially embedded in opposite wall of the casing to be supported thereby, a plurality of transverse pipe sections between and "-011- nccted to each opposite pair of castings, other pipe sections connecting the castings and the castings having passages whereby the transverse pipe sections are connected in series, and an apertured water supply pipe extending from one of the upper castings through the pipe sections and castings.
