WITNESSES. JNVENTOR.
Q a 151% .8 kinr sr 2 W BY ATTORNEYS mainsta Toall whom away-comm;
Be'itknown that I,ERN s'r 1 a citizen of the'United'States, and resident of Dorchester, in thecounty of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain' newand useful Improvements in Organ-Pipes, of whichthe following is a specification.-
The present pipes and its main object'isto produce, a
pipe which-will speak with the characteristic tonelof a French horn. I have accomplished this object by making certain modifications in and additions to the standard reed plpe,
which I will now describe and hereinafter I claim.
.drawings in which The features in which my invention co'n-v sists are illustrated in the accompanying Figure lis an elevationof a reed pipe embodying my invention, the upper end of which is shown broken away.- Fig. 2 1s an elevation as seen from the right of Fig. 1 of the upper end of my improved organ pipe. Fig. Sis a longitudinal section on line-33 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale, representing the interior construction of the foot and shallot. Fig; 4: is a sectional viewof the mouthpiece'on a plane atright angles to that of the line 3+3, and showing the shallotin elevation as viewed from the leftof Fig: 3, the tongue and tuning wire being omitted. I Like reference characters designate the Y same parts in all the figures,
In the drawings a'represents thefoot, b the body, 0 the shallot or reed, d the, tongue,
and e the tuning wire ofan organpipe of I bination, hereinafter described is preserved;
the'reed type. The foot and body are or may be constructed and connected together in the manner usual with pipes of this type,
theymay be made in any other metal or ma- 7 terial whatever suitable for the purpose. The foot has the usual opening fat one end, while its opposite end is stopped by a plug or a block 9* having a central passageway into one end of which the small end of the bodyis inserted, and into the opposite'end of which, and within the foot is inserted the open endof the shallot. The latter is secured in the plug and the ,tongue is likewise secured so asito extend over the opening h" in the side of the shallot, by means of a wedge i in the usual manner. The. tuning s a-amal am rfttisrat liy invention rel-ates. to organ vibrating periodof the tongue, the vibrating Minimum filed'mmh 263915;: SeriaI No. 17,153.
-."wiref;shown* is.- ofthe usual formandfunc .t1ons m the ordinary manner.
1 fraaaaaraaiea I The improvements which I have -made, 7
by which I have secured radically new effects in the qualityjof tone produced by the pipe consist of the following; The shallot is made with greater than ordinary length I and is extended below the lowerendof the opening it, thus forming a pocket j below said opening, -suchpocket or course being closed at the bottom end of the shallot. The top of the body tube is closed or covered by. an end wall Jr}, thus providing a pocket Z in said body. In one sideof the pocketl is .a tuning slit o'adjacent to which "is the tuning flap or tongue 70. The function of the vibrating period of the, column of air in the body it into synchronism with the length of which latter, and by consequence this tuning slit and tuning flap is to bring the pitch of the pipe, being controlled by the tuning wire e. I a p I I have found that pipes constructed with the novel features above described, that is combininga pocket in the shallot ofthe pipe below the reed, with a pocket in the top end of the body, simulate exactly the characteristic tone of the French horn.
Thev drawings here presented to illustrate as limiting the invention .to the particular 'of thepipe,either as to'its body and foot or the foregoing. description are not to be taken form 'of reed pipe shown, or as excluding its shallot and tongue, provided the com j I Where in the foregoingdescription and the" following claims I have used the words above, below, top,, bottom, or words of similar meanings I have, intended vsuch words to refer to the position inwhich the pipe is shown in the drawing and to that in l which it is usually placed, and without any intention of limitingthe location or position in "whichta .pipe embodying the invention upperend, in combination with a shallot I having a pocket in its lower end.
