To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon T. ROSEN- onnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to gas valves and more particularly to mechanism for operating gas-valves to alternately open'and close them by the pull of a chainor cord in one direction. 1
An object of the invention is to provide a valve of this type with operating mechanism which is simple in construction and may be produced at a low cost.
A further object of the invention isto provide operating-mechanism for a valve of this type which is compact and constructed so that it will not be rendered inoperative by the heat rising from a lamp suspended beneath the valveandin close proximitv thereto.

2. Fig. 5is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an elevation showing the manner in which the valve is usually connected to a lamp.
The valve comprises a casing 10, which is provided with a screw-thread 11 at one end, for connection to a supply-pipe 12. and a screw-thread 14 at its opposite end for connection to a delivery-pipe 15. A tapered plug 16 is-fitted in a correspondlng tapered seat in the valve-body and has a through-port 17 therein'adapted to connect the ports 18 and 19 in the valve casing. coil-spring 20, having one of lts ends hearing on the casing and its other end against a cap 21, which is secured to one of the projecting ends of the plug by a screw 22, serves to frictionally hold the plug in its lever 28. Said lever carries a pawl 30 which is pivoted thereto as at 31 and is normally pressed into engagement with ratchet 24 1 by a spring 32 which is secured to the lever at 33. Lever-28 fits against the outer face of ratchet 24 and is limited to swing through an arc of a little over 90 by a lug 35 formed on and projectinglaterally from the valve-casinglO. Downward movement of the lever is limited by an abutment 36 formed on said lever and adapted to strike the stop-lug 35. One edge of the lever is adapted to engage said lug to limit the upward movement of the lever. The lever and pawl are adapted to rotate the valve-plug step-by-step in one direction. A pawl 37, which is pivoted to a lug 38 on casing 10,
engages ratchet 34, and prevents backward rotation of said ratchet and the valve-plug. An outwardly projecting lug 39 prevents the center of gravity of the pawl 37 from beingthrown across its pivot when the lever is operated quickly. The lever and pawl connection for the plug serves as a one'way step-by-step operating connection.
A convolute spring 40 for retracting lever 28, has one of its ends attached to a stud 41 on lug 35 and its other end is attached to a stud 42 which is secured to lever 28. The spring also passes around a stud 43 on lever 28 so that there will be an eitective winding of the spring during a short stroke of the lever, said stud preventing the coils of the spring from forming near the center of the lever.
A cup-shaped cap 45 is held on the stem 16 of the valve and against a shoulder 46 thereon by a nut 47. This cap serves as a shield for inclosing the spring and its connections and protects them from heat rising from a lamp 50, which is suspended from and ()fi' to indicate the position of the valve.
A suitable connection 60 for a pilot-light is provided on the inlet-side of the valvecasing 10. i
The invention thus provides a one-way operating connection for a gas-valve which is simple in construction and can be, produced at a comparatively low cost. Furthermore, the connections are disposed close to the valve-casing so that a pull exerted upon the lever will not impose material bending stresses upon the valve and delivery pipe. The operating-mechanism is constructed so as to insure the proper strokes to open and close the valve by successive pulls upon the pendent chain 29.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a valve, the combination with a casing, a plug-valve rotatable therein and having its stem extending laterally from the casing, a ratchet-wheel secured to said stem, a lever mounted to swing around said stem, a pawl for operating the ratchet in one direction on the lever, a spring connected to the casing and to said lever, a rigid dog pivoted to the casing, for holding the ratchet against retraction, and a stop-lug integral with and projecting laterally from the casing, for limiting the movement of the dog.
2. In a valve, the combination with a casing, a plug-valve rotatable therein and having its stem extending laterally from the casing, a ratchet-wheel secured to said stem,
a lever mounted to swing around said stem, a pawl for operating the ratchet in one direction on the lever, a convolute spring having one or" its ends connected to the to the lever and to the casing.

8. In a valve, the combination with a casing, a plug-valve rotatable therein and having its'stem extending laterally from the casing, a ratchet-wheel secured to said stem, a lever mounted to swing around said stem, a pawl for operating the ratchet in one direction on the lever, a convolute spring having itsouter end connected to the casing and its inner end to the lever, and a laterally projecting eccentric stud on the lever around which the inner coil of the spring passes.

In a valve, the combination with a casing, a plug-valve rotatable therein 'and having its stem extending laterally from the casing, a ratchet-wheel secured to said stem, a lever mounted to swing around said stem, a pawl on the lever for operating the ratchet in one direction, a spring connected to the casing and to said lever, and a cupshaped cap secured to the stem adjacent the outer end thereof and rotatable therewith and inclosing said spring and its connections 5. In a valve, the combination casing, a plug-valve rotatable therein and having its stem extending laterally from the casing, a ratchet-wheel secured to said stem, a lever mounted to swing around said stem,
