' METALLIC CASK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 191 6.
Application filed October 2 1, 1913. Serial No. 797,026.
To all 1072 0% it may concern Be it known that I, IVIICHAEL" BROGHU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Casks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to metallic casks; and its object is to provide a metallic cask having separable parts and similar generally to" that described in my Patent No. 643,787 dated February 20, 1900, but improved thereover in certain respects, particularly the following: the provision of improved protecting and strengthening means for the cask; the provision of an air chamber surrounding the cask; the provision of means whereby the several parts of such improved structure may be readily disassembled for cleaning, etc., and easily reassembled; and the provision of such means in various combinations; and a further object of this, my present invention, is to provide a metallic cask improved in various respects hereinafter appearing. These objects are attained by, and the invention finds a preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure 1 is a side view of such structure; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is an axial section of such structure on line AB of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the cask halves, shown partly in axial section; Fig. 6 is a like view of the packing member; and Fig. 7 is a detail enlarged fragmentary view of the joint between the cask halves.
The cask comprises two parts, preferably halves, 1, 2, and formed preferably of stamped sheet metal, their open ends being provided with outwardly-extending flanges 3 concavo-convex in cross-section. A suitable round packing 4 is contained in the concave portion of the flanges and between the assembled halves 1, 2. Detachable clamping rings 5, 6 surround the cask halves respectively, abutting against the convex side of their flanges; these clamping rings are provided with suitable means, as the screw-threaded mutual engagement particularly shown in Fig; 3, whereby they may be drawn together to tightly connect the two cask halves. Heads 18, 7 are detachably to the respective clamping connected to the respective rings 5, 6 as by diametrically-oppositely disposed screwthreaded rods 8, 9. The clamping rings, head, and screw-threaded rods, ,together with a suitable number of rods 10, extending between and detachably secured rings and heads as by being le into suitable sockets 11 therein, form protecting means whereby the cask halves are kept from injury during transportation, etc. Metallic shells 12, 13 each in form the hollow frustrum of a cone, surround the respective cask halves and are detachably connected to the heads and clamping rings, as by their edges being let into suitable annular grooves 14 in such heads-and rings, and being securely held therein by the threaded rods 8, 9. It will be seen that these shells, together with the heads 18, 7, and the clamping rings, form an air chamber surrounding the cask halves. In order to fill 'or empty the cask, a suitable plug 15 is provided, threaded into a boss 16 carried by one of the cask halves 1, and tightly engaging Within an orifice 17 through the corresponding head 18.
It will be seen that all the parts of my improved cask, by means-0f the detachable connections shown, may be readily assembled, and disassembled for the purposes of cleaning, transporting, or storing the device.
Not confining myself to details of construction shown or described, I claim:.
-1. In a device of the character described, a cask comprising two separable parts respectively provided with detachable clamping rings adapted to be drawn together to tightly connect the separable cask parts; heads outside the ends of said separable parts; cask-protecting members extending between the respective rings and heads; and means for detachably connecting the respective heads, rings and protecting members together.
2. In a device of the character described, a cask comprising two separable parts each having, a peripheral flange, detachable clamping rings adapted to engage the respective flanges and to be drawn together to tightly connect theseparable cask parts; heads outside the ends of said separable parts; cask-protecting members extending.
v necting the respective heads, rings, shells spe ctivefheads, rings. and protecting mend" ."heads outside the ends of said separable parts cask-protecting members extending between the rings and headsyshells inside thecask-protecting members and extending between the respective heads and clamping rings, whereby an air chamber outside the cask is formed in the assembled position of the device; and means for detachably conand protecting memberstogether.
4. In a device of the character described,
a cask comprising tWoseparable parts respectively provided with detachable clamp- '.ing rings adapted to be drawn together to tightly connect the separable cask parts; heads outside the ends of the said separable parts, the rings and heads having annular grooves; andshells detachably connected to 'the'respective heads and clamping rings and engaging in said grooves, whereby an air 1,1 eepee 'chamb'er'outside the cash is formed n the assembled posltlon of the device 5,111 a device of thecharacter described,
a cask comprising two separableparts respectlvely provided with detachable clamp in'g rings adapted to be drawn together to tightly connect the separable cask parts;
1 heads outside the ends of the said separable parts, the rings and heads having annular grooves and sockets; cask-protecting members extending between the rings and heads and let into said socket; shells inside the cask-protecting members, extending between the heads and rings and let into said grooves, whereby an air chamber outside the cask is formed in the assembled position of the device; and screw-threaded bolts extending between the respedtive rings andheads to detachably connect them'and the cask-protecting members and shells together.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand inpresence of twosubscribing wit nesse v MICHAEL BEOCHU. Witnesses:
