Be it knownthat I, James M; Traces, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, inthe county of Huntington and Stateof Indiana, have inventeda certain new anduseful lVall-Receptacle, and I dohereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the in: vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich-it appertains to make and use the same,"reference beinghadto the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference; marked thereon, which forma part of this specification. This invention relates to a wall receptacle orchamber to which access may be had from either side of the wall. 1

The primary object-of my invention is the provision, in combination with a door or other swinging closure member, of an interior locking means therefor, which is capable of being set and maintained in unlocked position to permit a subsequentopening of the door from withoutand which is then automatically operable upon a closing of the door to lock it in closed position.

A further object of my invention is, the.

provision of a wallreceptacle or chamber suitable for receiving airticlesfrom either side of the wall and having inner and outer doors, both of which are provided with locks capableof being controlled from one side only of the wall, the lock for-the door atthe far sideof the wall being operable to maintain its door unlocked to permit a subsequent opening thereof, and being automatically operable to lock the door when next closed. Referring to the drawings,1and 2 designate telescoping members, preferably of sheet metal, which, in the present instance,

This enables the casing 1, 2 to be adjusted in length'to suit the thickness of the wall opening 3 in which it is to be inserted; The casing members 1,2 are provided at their outer ends with rims 7 and 8, respectively, which abut inwardly against the wall at the edge of the opening 3, the rim 7 carryingadoor 9v and the rim 8 "carrying a door 10 for cooperating with the rims to close the respective ends of the casing. r The door 10, which, in the present instance, maybe termed theinner door, carries a latch 11 for locking engagement with a catch 12 on the rim 8 when the door is closed, said latch and catch being disposed at the outer side of this door relative to the chamber or compartment formed by the on its inner-side with a gravity latch mem ber 13, which, when the door is closed, is adapted to have catch engagement with a lug or catch part l lon' the inner edge of the rim and thereby lock the door in closed position. The latch member 18' isadapted tohave free vertical movements relative to the door and has its nose tapered to adapt itto rideover and be raised by the catch part 14 and then to drop into catch engagement therewith upon a closing of the door.

A chain or other suitable draft member 15 extends up from the latch member 13 through an apertured guide lock 16 projecting inward from the upper edge of the door 9 near its outer or free end, thence extends along the upper edge portion of the door to near the rear edge thereofand through an apertured guide part 17 in'the upper inner corner of the rim 7. The" draft member 15 thence passes, in the present instance, toward the door 10 and through an apertured guide part 18 provided in the adjacent corner of the rim 8. The draft member, after passing through the guide. part 18, hangs down therethrough and is when combined with the frictional action of the draft member 15 on the guide parts 16, 17 and 18, or rather when combined with the resistance which such parts ofier to a free movement of the draft member therethrough, is suflicient to counterbalance the weight of the catch member 13 and to retain it in elevated or released position with respect to the catch part lt providing it has been previouslyraised to such position by a pull exerted on the draft member, or in some other manner. It will be understood,

however, that the weight of the member 19 is not sufficient to overcome the resistance offered to the draft member 15 by the guide part 16, 17 and 18 and the weight, of the catch member 13 so to itself effect a raising or movement of the catch member 13 to released position. When the door 9 is swung open the chain or draft member 15 will be drawn outward thereby, by reason of the distance between the latch 13 and the aperture in the guide lug 17, when the door is closed, being shorter than the distance between said catch member and the swinging axis .of the door, asindicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. Consequently-upon a swinging of the door 9 from open to closed position slack will occur in the chain or draft member 15 between the guide lugs 16 and 17, and as the guide lug 16 offers a lessresistance to a taking up of the slack by the weight of the catch member 13 then the guide lugs 17 and 18 due to the taking up of the slack by the member 19, the catch memberwill drop to its locking position, which position will have been assumed by the catch member prior to the movement of the catch member into engagement with the catch part 1-1, thus permitting an automatic looking. of the door upon a closing thereof.

Should my improved device be employed between an inner and outer wall of a house orapartment the milkman, grocer, or the like, can open the door9 and place milk or groceries therein, and upon a closing of such door the articles will then be safe against stealing or against being molested by dogs or cats, as might be the case if the articles were in an exposed place. In the case of milk the empty milk bottles can beplaced in the receptacleby a person from the inside, the draft member 15 being pulled to place the latch 13 in released position and the inner door 10 closed and locked to pre vent access to the house or apartment through the opening or chamber in the wall.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a stationary part having a catch member, a door hinged for swinging movements relative to said part, a latch member carried by said door for catch engagement with said catch member when the door is closed, and means manually operable at the inner side of said door to move said latch member to released position and counterbalance it in such position during an openingof the door, and automatically operable upon a closing movement of the door to permit the latch member to move by gravity into locking position.

2. In combination, a door casing having. a catch part interiorly thereof, a door hinged to said casing, a gravity latch member carering of the latch member into catch engaging position.

3-. The combination with a door. casing and a door hinged thereto, of a catch part carried by the casing, a gravitylatch member carried by the door in position to have locking engagement with the catch part when the door is closed, guide parts carried by said door and casing and a draft member weighted at one end and thence extending through said guide parts and connected to said latch member, the normal pull exerted on thelatch member by said draft member being sufficient to maintain the latch member in raised or released position when it has been moved to such position, said draft member and guide parts cooperating to counteract the gravity action of the'weighted end portion of the draft member and to permit a movement of the latch member into locking position during a swinging'of the door from opento closed position; r

4. In combination, a casing having a catch member, a door hinged to the casing and having a gravity latch member for engaging said catch member, guide parts on said door and casing, a flexible draft member extending up from the latch member, thencedoor and casing and being weighted at its;

free end, a guide part on said casing being located nearer to the free or outer edge of the door when closed than is the swinging axis of the door, said weighted draft member serving to maintain the latch member in raised or released position when it has been moved to such position and cooperating with said guide parts to slacken and permit a lowering of the latch member to locking position when the door is swung from open to closed position.

5. In combination, a case having'two doors arranged in different walls thereof, one door being hinged, means for locking the other of said doors at the outside of the case, and means within the case for locking the hinged door in closed position, said last means being operable from within said other door and independently of a movement thereof to retain the locking member thereof in released position when moved to such position and being automatically operable to lock the hinged door when swung from open to closed position.

6. In combination, a case having an inner and an outer door, each hinged with respect thereto, means in connection with the inner door at the outer side thereof for locking it in closed position, internal locking means for said outer door, said internal locking means having a gravity locking part and operable to maintain said part in unlocked position when it has been moved to such position and the door remains closed and being automatically operable independently of a movement of said inner door to permit said part to drop to locking position when the door is swung from open to closed position.
