To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn H. TAUsorI, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Winthrop Harbor, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification. 1

This invention relates to improvements in hinges for gates, and particularly to that type of hinges designed for use in connection with horizontally swinging and vertically adjustable gates constructed of metal and adapted for farm use, and of such arrangement of its parts as to be bodily raised, adjusted and supported so as to swing over snow-drifts or other accumulations, or to allow the passage thereunder of small animals while preventing, or barring, the passage of larger animals, and the invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement, combination and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The main object of the invention is to pro vide a hinge for a gate or an analogous structure, which will securely, but hingedly support the same, yet will permit it to be bodily adjusted vertically, or readily raised and lowered, yet will automatically lock the gate in any desired position of elevation, so as to prevent its downward movement.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the inventi0n-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the rear or hinged portion of a gate showing it supported on a post by means of a hinge embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of a portion of the rear endbar of the gate, a part of the rear fence post to which the gate is hinged, showing the improved adjustable hinge secured to the latter and engaging or supporting said gate bar. Fig. 3 is an inner face view of like parts. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line H of Fig. 3 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the hinge brackets.

The body of the gate, which is preferably made of woven wire or wire fabric is designated by the reference numeral 6 and may be connected to the gate frame which consists of upper and lower horizontal rails 7 and vertical end bars 8, in any suitable or well known manner. The rear end bar 8 of the gate, which the only one shown in the drawing, is by preference made of metal, and is for the purpose of engaging a holding or substantially ii-shaped in cross-section and has its rounded or closed portion presented toward the fence post 9 to which the gate is hinged. The free or front edges of the end bar 8 provided with a series of recesses 10 which are located one above the other as is clearly shown in the different views of the drawing. lfhese recesses are for the purpose of engaging a holding or looking member 11 of the adjustable hinge, which holding or looking member is by preference, horseshoe-shaped and provided with an opening 12, somewhat larger than the gate barv 8, but by preference of a corresponding shape. The front portion of the member 11 is provided with a transverse part 13 of sufficient length to extend beyond either side of the opening in the horizontal portion of the bracket which supports said holding or locking member.

Opposite the transverse portion 13, the member ll is provided with a projection 14:, which is by preference extended at a right angle from said member and is adapted to rest at its free end on the upper surface of the horizontal portion 15 of the bracket which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 16, and which bracket is secured to the front surface of the fence post 9 at the rear end of the gate. The bracket 16 is by preference angular as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and iof the drawing and its vertical portion is provided. with a plurality of slots 17, usually three in number, to receive bolts 18 extended through said slots into the post 9 at the rear end of the gate. By this arrangement, it is obvious that, when it is desired to raise the gate body, the holding member 11 of the adjustable hinge can be loosened from one of the recesses 10 of the gate bar 8 so that said bar can be moved with the gate to any desired height, in which operation the holding or locking member 11 will assume about the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing, until the extension 14 of said member is allowed to rest on the ledge or horizontal portion 15 of the bracket, when it is obvious that said member will engage at its front portion one of the recesses 10 of the bar 8 and at its rear portion the rear part of said bar, thus holding said post and the gate at the desired height with respect to the ground. Another hinge member 16 shown in. Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawing, which member may be of the same construction as the bracket 16 shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing, may

be employed to hold and guide the lower part of the gate bar 8, and for this purpose, like the bracket 16 of the first described construction, is provided with a circular opening 19 for the reception of the gate bar. As this lowerhinge member does not support the adjustable holding or locking member 11, the horizontal ledge or flange thereof may be reduced, or in other words it may be cut away as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the drawing.

The horizontal portion 15 of the brackets 16 and 16 is provided on its lower surface with a depending and annular extension 20 which surrounds the opening in said bracket as well as the gate bar and affords a good bearing for the latter. On each side of the opening 19 in the bracket the horizontal portion 15 is provided with a rib or extension 21 which unites said horizontal portion to the vertical part of said bracket and thus strengthens the same. It is obvious that by providing the vertical portion 22 of the bracket with a plurality of slots 17, said bracket can be readily secured to or mounted on the post 9, and if desired its height may be adjusted.

While the gate bar 8 is shown as being provided with recesses 10 in its front portion, and while it is preferable to so make the same, yet it is apparent that these recesses may be omitted and that a locking member 11 will hold the bar 8 in a fixed position when said locking member rests on the horizontal portion 15 of the bracket, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 1 of the drawing.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1. A hinge for gates consisting of a bracket having means to secure'it to a post and provided with a vertically disposed opening for the reception and operation of an upright member, said member being con- 7 nected to the gate and movably located within said opening, a holding member for the gate bar consisting of an orificed plate or member having an extension projected therefrom at an angle thereto and adapted to surround the gate bar above said bracket and to rest on the latter.

2. The combination with a post, of a pair of vertically apertured brackets adjustably secured one above the other to said post, a gate having an upright end bar located in the apertures of said brackets and having a series of recesses located one above the other, a holding or. locking member surrounding the gate bar and located on the upper surface of one of said brackets, said" holding member having an extension projected downwardly therefrom to; rest on said bracket to normally hold theholding member at an angle on the gate bar;
