APPARATUS FOR SWAGING lSAEIVLILIEISS CROWNS.
mesma.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
Application filed February 10, 1915. -Seral No. 7,426.
To all Lo/10m t may concern Be it known that we, GArLoRD M. Hiram and LOGAN L. HIDY, citizens of the United States, residing at Jeffersonville, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have` invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Apparatus for Swaging Seamless Crowns; and we do hereby declare the Afollowing' to be a full, clear, and exact descrip'- tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to apparatus for swaging seamless crowns, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an apparatus of comparatively simple construction which will Aquickly and efficiently form a seamless `crown of gold or other material.
Another object of the invention isto provide an apparatus of comparatively simpley construction for forcing a sectional inner or counter die outward against the inner walls of a die to press the seamless crown between the dies so that it will take the exact contour of the outer die upon the outer side and the inner die upon its inner side, the means for forcing the counter die outward being in the form of a wedge or expanding tool.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an apparatus for expanding crowns made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sectional outer die, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of an expanding tool -used in connection with the apparatus, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through a portion of the bed block, and through the sectional outer and inner dies with an expander in place and showing the seamless crown in position between the inner and outer dies, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of Aan expanding tool of slightly modified form, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the two mem bers of the inner die, ,and Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a seamless crown, such as is made on the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates the base portion of a suitable press, and 2 are the spaced arms of the same, connected by a cross bar or cross head 3.
tions 14 Mounted on the cross head is a casing 4, in which is pivoted a camlever 5, said lever having a cam or eccentric head 6 pivoted at 7 and adapted to bear upon the upper end of a shaft S which extends through the cross head 3 and through the enlargement 9 thereon. A spiral spring 10 encircles vthe shaft and is connected at one end thereto, while the other end bears against the enlargement 9, said spring serving to retract the shaft 8, while the eccentric head 6 of the cam lever is adapted to force the shaft downward.
The character of the press to be used in connection with this invention may be varied within wide limits.
Connected to the shaft 8 preferably by means of av pin 11 is an expanding tool 12 having a tapering or wedge-shaped end 13, which may be provided with dove-tail porl, one upon each side of the wedge 13. As shown in Fig. 5, the expanding tool 12 maybe provided with a plain wedgeshaped end 13a, the dove-tail portions 14 being omitted, and for `some kinds of work this tool is to be preferred to the one previously described.y
The bed block is preferably made of wood and of two sections 15 and 15a, the section 15a being provided with a guide or keeper 16 which engages one of the arms 2 of the press. The two sections of the bed block are held in intimate connection by means of a binding screw 17 extending through one of the arms 2 and provided with a swiveled bearing member 18. The screw 17 is provided with a winged thumb piece 19. Fitted in an opening 20 in the bed blocks 15, 15a are the sections 21 of the outer die, said sections having their inner walls 22 and the bottom 23 formed to the exact contour of the outer surface of the crown a. The inner dies 24 are made in two sections with their outer surfaces conforming to the contour of the inner walls 22 of the die 21. The inner dies 24 are provided with recesses 25 which may be wedge-shaped or dove-tail, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
The manner of using the apparatus may be briefly described as follows: The sheet metal or gold of which the crown a is formed is of uniform gage or thickness and is placed within the die members 22 and the inner dies 25 are placed within the crown. The two dies are then placed in the bed blocks 15 and 15a and the expanding tool is inserted between the two members of the inner die i thespirit and scope of theinvention as denedA in the claims.`
v hatl .is claimed is 1.. An apparatus for forming seamless crowns whichcomprises a sectional outer die,fa sectional inner die, an expanding tool adapted to engage the inner surfaces of the inner die for crowding them outward to for-1n a crown between `the inner and outer dies, said expanding `tool having a wedge- Ishaped end, and said inner die being rey cessed to receive the wedge.
v QVAn apparatus for swaging seamless crowns comprising a bed block having a recess therein and formed of two sections,
Gepies 01.'l this, patent may be obtained for means for holding said sections together, a die made in two sections and tted in the aperture between the bed block'sections, an innerdie, and an expanding tool to fit be- A tween the two members of the. expanding dle and crowd the members outward against av crown blank between the inner andy outer dies. i
8. An apparatus for forming seamless crowns comprising a press having a shaft mounted therein, a spring for raising said shaft, a cam lever for'depressing said shaft, a bed block, anl outer diev mounted in the bed block, an inner die mounted in the outer die, and any expanding tool adapted to enter between the inner dies, said expanding tool having a Awedge-shaped end to force the inner die members outward and form a crownV between said inner dies and outer dies.
In testimony whereof we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
