Application lefllsepteniher 8, 1915'. Sera11\To. 49,601.
T 0 all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ABEL CHERNACK, a subject of the Emperor' of Russia, and a resident of the city of Providence, county ofProvidence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and Improved Lathe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lathes and parf ticularly to multiple lathes the object of'my invention being to provide aheavy duty lathe for rough turning cylindrical metal kpieces several at a time.
. fn the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation partially broken away of, a lathe in which my invention is embodied in one form; Fig. 2 is aparti-ally broken pglan'Y thereof; F ig. 3 is a lbroken end elevation of the same; FigQ4 is a vertical section through a. detail. V l
The bed 10. of the lathe is of usual construction and has firmly attached thereto a head stock 11. Mounted in the latter is a driving pulley 12 havingk a long sleeve13 carrying pinion 14. The latter meshes with gea-r' 15 compounded with pinion 16 which in turn engages with gear 17 fast on the end of shaft 18 at the back of the bed and extending the length of the latter. A key .groove 19 (F ig. 3) reaching the length of this shaft receives the keys of the several pinions 2O which are slidably engaged. therewith. These pinions 20` in turn mesh with peripheral gear teeth on face plates 21. Through this triple gear system the drive of the pinion 14 is transmitted to any number (here five) of face plates. i
The spindle 22 of the headstock extends through the sleeve 13 of the pulley 12 and in the other direction through the sleeve 23 of the adjacent face plate 21. A key connection 24 between this sleeve 23 and the spindle 22 insures the drive of the spindle at the same speed as the face plate from the shaft 18, which is of course much slower than the speed of the pulley 12, by reason of the triple gear transmission. On the end of the spindle 22 is xed a pinion 25 which meshes with a gear 26 compounded with a pinion 27. The latter meshes1 with an idler 28 which in turn meshes with the gear 29 fast on the .end of the feed screw 30 which is of common type. In order to permit the speed of the drive of the shaft 18 to be varied, the gear 17 is removable and may besubstituted by a gear ofi'differentsize, andvin this lcase the housing 31 'in which gea-rs 15' and 16 are supported, swings on'theV sleeve 13tobring the pinion 16 into mesh' with the new gear l17. i The parts are normally heldin properly: to meshed relation by the clamping bolt 32 which works in the slots 33 ofthe brackets 34, 35. Similarly, if`tlie speed of the' feed isfto be changed' the idler 28 is changed to the desired size and swung on its pivoted arm 36 to proper meshingrelation tothe pinions 27 and 29. i
Each of themultiple face plates 21 is oai; `ried by an independent tail stock 37' having -VL-grooves, in its lo\verface to lit the ribs 38 onfthelathe bed along which thev tail A stocks a-reslidable to space the saine apart the required distance'- to receive the blanks 39`. Bolt'YV plates 40:v clamp the tail stolc'kfsiiii adjusted position on ythe bed." Each yface plate has a sleeve 41 journaled in avbearing in the head o f the tail stock and held in position by a collar'42Lf4 rllhe face plate center 43 is? setintoaf recess inthe v'face platt-and heldin position by sere-ws 44. It isceiitered with relationt'o the plate 21 'by a shortI stud 45 vwhich enters the borepf'the sleeve'v'4f1. At the opposite end ofthe sleeve 41 is arranged a center 4`6'that corresponds tothe usual 4tail stock center. This center 46 .is formed at the end of a rod 47 fitting the bore of the sleeve 41and having a threaded section 48 which screws into the tapped end 49 of the sleeve. A kiiurled flange Lo0 is formed' on the rodI adjacent vthe centerV 46 to afford a linger grip and the rod also carL ries a lock nut 51 in the form ofa small hand wheel.
It is obvious that the center 46 which serves as a tailr stock cen-ter, and'also the vface plate center 43', are bothv driven lat the same speed and revolve with the work blank. The face plate 21 and/its related parts thus form a combined head kland taill stock with both centers rotatable.
y The blank is engaged with the face plate through a dog 52 carried by the blanlnand engaging slots 53 formed in the face pl ate to receive them and thus afford a driving con'- 1 nection for the blank. Theta-il center 46 is engaged with the blank by screwing the rod 47 out or in, by manipulation of the rod through the knurled flange 50, the lock nut 51 having been lirst lcosed, whereupon the latter isy again tightened and the drive may be commenced.
The tool saddle comprises a pair of railsv 54:, 55, having V-grooves on their lower faces to engage and slide upon the ribs 56, 57, onI opposite sides of the bed and outside the ribs f having been secured, their tools act in univstruction and operation and need not be son simultaneously upon the several blanks. The cross pieces spanning the rails and bolted thereto connect thelatter rigidly at five points and form a. very rigid and substantial tool table.
The tool holder 63 is of common construction and preferably carries a. pair of cutters 64, one arranged slightly in advance of the other so that the second tool serves only as the finishing tool and the wear thereon consequently much lessened. The feed apron 65 carried, with its appliances, by the front rail 54 of the tool table, is of common coneX- plained in detail.
Among the advantages of the construction may be pointed out (l) capacity for acting on a large number of blanks simultaneously, (2) capacity for receiving a greater or less number of blanks according to the length of the latter, by removing or adding the combined tail stock and face plate units and their related parts, (3) flexibility of operation by adjusting either speed of drive or speed of tool feed, (4) simplicity of combined head and tail stock unit constructions, saving in wear through driving of both tail and head stock centers, (6)
j elimination of oiling troubles at ordinary stationary tail stock center, (7) improved head stock drive connections, (8) simple and rugged construction of-tail stocks and tool table.
Various features of improvement will readily suggesty themselves to those skilled inthe art without departing from what I claim as my invention.
I claim as my invention 1..A multiple lathe having a bed, a plui rality of combined head and tail stocks arranged in tandem and longitudinally adjustable thereon, a tool table common-t0 said organization, a plurality of tool carriers, one for each work blank, mounted on said table, and means for driving in unison the lrotors of the several combined head and tail stocks and simultaneously traveling the tool table past the blanks to operate upon the series simultaneously.

4. In a multiple lathe, a combined head and tail stock having a pair of oppositely faced centers` and means for driving the same simultaneously at the same speed, said i centers being vrelatively displaceable to permit of the adjustment of a work blank without disturbing the position of the combined head and tail stock, together with means to lock the same in adjusted relation. i l
