TABLE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, rain.
Application filed June 6, 1910. Serial No. 565,293.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUGH E. lViLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Tops, of which the following is a speciiication My invention relates to tables, and its object is to provide a table top having a central member and a surrounding extension member supported thereby and preferably connected detachably therewith, and also to pro vide devices for effecting such detachable connection, and other devices by which the extension member may be folded on'itself for convenience; and the same in combinations-all as hereinafter set forth and claimed. These objects are attained by, and my invention is embodied in, the mechanism hereinafter described, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a table having a top constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line ss of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an edgewise view of the extension member of the top of said table as the same would be seen from the bottom of Fig. 1, the sections 10 with 11, and 18 with 14, being folded downward; Fig. i is another edgewise view of said extension member as the same would be seen from the side of Fig. 1, said sections being folded closely under sections 8 and 9, and the sections 10 and 13 being then folded toward sections 11 and 14; Fig. 5 is a detail side view of one of the clamping hinges 16 and 17 with broken portions of the sections connected thereby; Fig. 6 is an under plan view of the same; Fig. 7 is a detail side view of one of the buttons whereby the extension member is firmly secured to the central member of my table top, with broken parts of said members; and Fig. 8 is a plan view of a part of a square table top illustrating the adaptation of my invention thereto.
Suitable legs 1 and frame or rim 2 carry a central table top member 3, circular in the construction shown in Fig. 1. On this central member is supported a surrounding extension member, also circular in the construction illustrated in Fig. 1. and closely fitting the central member as shown. The secure connection of these members together may be effected by various devices; preferably, however, the central member has an annular rib 4 around its periphery on which the extension member is adapted to be supported by its corresponding annular groove 5 formed on its internal edge, and resting on said rib as shown. This groove and internal edge may be provided with a lining 6 of felt, rubher, or other suitable material, in order to prevent any abrasion of the periphery of the central member, as well as to insure a close fit between the members all around. Suitable means are preferably provided for clamping the rib and groove together to tightly connect the members, as the buttons 7 pivoted on the under side of the extension member and adapted to be turned to engage the under side of the central member as shown.
For convenience my table top is preferably formed in sections connected by hinges on the under side, that the sections may be folded together in small space. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, which I regard the most preferable, the oppositely disposed and corresponding sections 8 and 9 are joined to the sections 10 and 11 by hinges 12 on one side and to sections 13 and 14 by hinges 15 on the other side, the pintles of the hinges on each side being alined: when the sections 10 and 11 and the sections 13 and 14: are turned on their hinges downwardly and inwardly until they are folded closely against the under side of the sections 8 and.9, the pintles of the hinge 16 connecting the sec tions 10 and 11 and the pintles of the hinge 17 connecting the sections 13 and l t will be alined, and by turning these hinges as illus trated in Fig. 4, the sections may be folded together, and very closely by providing said hinges 16 and 17 with double pintles and connecting links 18 long enough to accommodate the thickness of the sections 8 and 9 as shown. That the extension member may be clamped in the line of the plane of the table top to closely fit the periphery of the central member, one of the leaves of one of the hinges 16 and 17 (or, preferably, one of the leaves of both of them) may be slidably attached to its section of the extension member, as by a slotted bearing 21, and may be provided with a suitable clamping device, as the cam-lever 22 adapted to be turned to draw its pintles inwardly from the edge of its section, as particularly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
My invention may be employed in other as well as circular table tops, as shown in the square table illustrated in Fig. 8; andsueh tops may be formed in sections 19 and connected by hinges 20, as shown.
Not confining myself to the details ofconstruction shown and described further than as set forth in the claims, Iclaim:
1. 'In a table "top of the character described having' a centralmemberandan extension member surrounding the central member and "detachably connected thereto and formed in connected sections, a hinge connecting'adjaccnt sections andzhaving one of its .leavessecuretlto its section on slide bearings, and a cam-lever adapted to :move said leaf to draw said adjacent sections ;to-
gether, for the purpose described.
2. In a table top :of the character .described, a central member and an extension member surrounding :the central member and detachably connected thereto and formed :in six sections fold'able on connecting hinges, a pair of such sections being said *first pair and being hingedly-connected together, the axes of such hinged connections being alined, the remaining tWo sections beinghinged to one pair of said hingedly-conhingedly-connected together, and another pair of sections oppositely disposed to the nected sections on one side and to the other pair ,of EhiDgGdLYTGOIIHGCtGd sections on the other side, the axes of the hinges connecting said remaining atwosections With one said pair of hingedlyeconnected sections being alinediand theqaxesof the hinges connecting said remaining FCWO sections with :the other said ,paircf:hingedlymonnected sections beingalined.
In itness whereof, have signed ,my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
