INSOLE-REINFORCING MACE-ENE.

To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL S. Nononn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of hlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Insole-Rein- The invention relates to machines for pre paring insoles and more particularly to chines for applying reinforcing material to insoles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction and arrangement of devices for forming the bead or crimp in the reinforced material and securing it to the insole, whereby the proper and uniform shaping and securing of the reinforced material to the insole is insured.
To this end a feature of the invention contemplates the provision in a machine for reinforcing insoles of means for bending the reinforced lip or the bead in the reinforce material which forms the lip of the finished insole inward at an inclination to the surface of the sole. This bending of the bead or reinforced lip inward is of advantage, especially through the shank of a sole, in that it enables the lasting operation to be more conveniently performed, and also enables the stitches to be properly located along the base of the stitch receiving lip or bead during the sewing of the upper to the insole.
It will be recognized by those skilled in the art, from the following description, that this feature of the invention is not limited to use in a machine for performing an insole reinforcing operation but may advantageously be employed in other types of ma chines, for example, in a machine for preparing the lip of a solid or unreinforced insole for the lasting and inbeaming operations. The bending inward of the lip in case the insole is formed by bending and shaping the reinforce material abouts lip pre viously formed on the sole, also 1nsures the forcing of the reinforce material firmly 1nto the angle at the juncture of the feather and lip, so that the reinforce material is properly and uniformly secured to the lip and feather throughout the forepart and shank.

A further feature of the invention contemplates the provision in a machine for securing reinforce material to insoles of a fixed forming tool for eng ing the outside of the lip, and a cooperating conical pressure roll arranged to continuously engage the inside of the lip, and cooperating with the fixed forming tool to apply pressure continuously and progressively to the opposite sides of the reinforced lip. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the engaging surface of the outside forming tool, and the cooperating periphery of the conical roll, are
substantially parallel and are at an inclination to the surface of the work support on which the sole being operated upon is supported, so that the roll and former constitute the means for bending the lip or head inward at an inclination to the surface of the sole.
The various features of the invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment of the invention, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an insole reinforcing machine embodying the present invention in its preferred form; Fig. 2 is a similar view on a larger scale with parts removed for clearness; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the devices shown in Fig. 1; Fig. l is a side elevation similar to Fig. 2 but looking in the opposite direction; and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the parts shown in Figs. 2 and l.
The invention is intended primarily as an improvement in the machine shown and described in the patent to Had-away, No. 61%,860, November 29, 1898, for an insole reinforcing machine, and in the drawings the invention is illustrated as embodied in the machine of that patent. As shown, the machine is provided with an intermittently rotating work table 1, a former or anvil 2, a bead or crimp forming tool 3, and a and operated as fully described in the patent above referred to, to progressively form a bead or crimp in the reinforce material as the sole is intermittently fed forward by the work support and bead forming tool.
in embodying the present improvements in the machine of the patent above referred to, the machine is provided with devices for continuously and progressively applying pressure to the opposite sides of the lip .after the reinforce material has been bent forming devices. In the construction shown,
the devices for acting upon the lip aften the reinforce material has been bent about the lip by the crimp or head forming devices, consist of a small conical roll 5 arranged to engage the inner side of the lip and co operating with a forming tool 6 arranged to engage the outer side of the lip. The conical roll 5 is carried by the lower end of a substantially vertical shaft 7 which is mounted to rotate in a bearing block 8. The upper end of the bearing block is pivotally supported at 9, and a spring 10 connected with the bearing rod acts to force the roll 5 yieldingly against the inner side of the lip. The shaft 7 is forced downward so as to press the roll firmly against the surface of the sole by a lever 11 arranged to engage theupper end of the shaft and acted upon by a spring 12. By the action of the springs 10 and 12 the roll 5 is continuously forced toward the forming tool 6, and is also forced downward against the surface of the sole so that the roll and tool will apply an efiective pressure upon opposite sides of the lip, and will force the fabric into the angles at the base of the lip.
The lip engaging surface on the outside forming tool 6 is preferably arranged so that it inclines inward toward the medial line of the sole, and the conical roll is so shaped and arranged that its cooperating periphery is substantially parallel to the engaging surface of the forming tool. With the forming tool and roll thus constructed and arranged, they will act to bend the lip inward at an inclination to the surface of the sole so that it will stand at the proper angle to the bottom of the last for the convenient and proper lasting and sewing of the shoe when the sole is bent transversely in applying it to the curved bottom of the last. This arrangement of the lip engaging surface of the roll and former tool also insures the shaping and bending of the lip and reinforce material so that the reinforce material is pressed firmly into the angle between the feather and the base of the lip even in case 1 the lip has not been properly bent back and set previous to the application of the reiir force material.
The roll 5 may be mounted to rotate freely about its axis as the sole is advanced, but it is preferred to drive the roll so that it will assist in feeding forward the work. The rotation of the roll also increases its efficiency in properly pressing the reinforce material against the inner surface of the lip and against the sole at the base of the lip. In the construction shown the roll 5 is provided at its upper end with a pinion 13 engaged by an intermediate pinion 14 which is in turn engaged and driven by a gear 15.
The gear 15 is connected with a pulley 16 which is driven through, a belt 17 from a pulley 18 secured to the main shaft of the machine.
In order to facilitate the introduction of if the lip between the roll 5 and the forming tool 6, when placing the work in position upon the work support 1, devices are provided for swinging the bearing block 8 away from the forming tool 6 when the work support 1 is depressed for the introduction of a new piece of work. In the form shown these devices comprise a plate 19 arranged to engage the inner side of the bearing block and mounted upon a rock shaft 20. The rock shaft is providedat one end with an arm 21 connected by means of a link 22 with an arm 23 secured to one end of a rock shaft 24. The other end of the rock shaft 24 is provided with an arm 25 which is conblock 8 toward the right in Fig. 2 thus swinging the roll 5 away from the forming tool 6. When the work has been placed in position upon the workv supporting table 1 and the treadle is released, the parts return to their normal position, and the spring 10 acts to force the roll 5 against the inner surface of the lip so that the lip is firmly com pressed between the roll and outside former 6.
The upward pressure on the table 1 forces the feather of the sole firmly against the lower end of the forming tool while the springs 10 and 12 force the roll 5 firmly against the lip and against the upper surface of the sole at the base of the lip. The reinforce material is thus firmly pressed against both sides of the lip and into the angles at the base of the lip. The proper forming and uniting of the reinforce material to the insole is therefore insured and since the pressure is continuously and progressively applied to the reinforce material, there is little, if any, danger that the material will spring away from the lip and feather after the lip has passed from be- 1 of all its features essential except so far as specified in the appended claims, and it may be varied or modified without departing from the true scope of the invention.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1- p l. 3. A machine for reinforcing insoles, having, in combination, a work support, a coni cal roll mounted to rotate about an aXis substantially normal to the work engaging surface of the work support and arranged to continuously engage the inner side of the lip of a sole supported on the work support, a forming tool arranged to engage the outer side of the lip and cciiperating with the roll to compress the lip, and means for yieldingly forcing the roll against the lip and surface of the sole, substantially as described.

A machine for preparing insoles, hav ing, in combination, a work support, a conical roll arranged to engage, with its circumferential surface, the inner face of the lip of an insole supported on said work sup- -roll in the line of feed arranged port and mounted to rotate about an axis substantially normal to the sole engaging surface of the work support, a nonrotatahle lip forming tool in fixed relation to said to engage the outer face of the lip and cooperate with said circinnferential surface of the roll to bend the lip inward, and means for drivin said roll.

A. machine for preparing insoles, hav ing, in combination, a work support, a conical roll arranged to engage the inner side of the lip of an insole supported on said worlr support and mounted to rotate about an axis substantially normal to the sole engaging surface of the worl: su 'iport, means for yieldingly pressing said roll against the lip of the sole, and a pressure device outside the lip having a lip engaging face inclining inward toward the medial line of the sole and coiiperating with the roll to bend the lip inward.

A machine for preparing insoles, having, in combination, a work support, a bearing block pivotally mounted above said work support, a conical roll arranged to engage the inner side of the lip mounted to rotate on a shaft in said block substantially normal to the work engaging surface of the work support, means engaging the upper end of said shaft acting to yieldingly press said roll against the face of the sole, and a lip forming tool arranged to engage the outer side of the lip and cooperate with the roll to bend the lip inward 9. A machine for preparing insoles, having, in combination, a supporting frame, a depressible wort support mounted thereon, a rotary conical roll mounted on said frame and adapted to be moved toward and from said work support, means connected therewith and also with said work support for respectively swinging said roll toward and from operative position relative to said work and a non-rotatable lip forming tool in fixed relation to said roll in the line of feed arranged to engage the outer side of the lip having an inclined lip engaging face for cooperating with the circumferential surface of said roll to bend the lip inward.
10. A machine for preparing insoles, having, in combination, a work support, lip
forming devices for continuously and progressively acting along the lip of an insole '1 supported on said work support comprising, a non-rotatable outside forming tool fixed in the direction of feed engaging the outer side of the lip from base to top and having an inwardly inclined lip engaging face, and
an inside pressure roll having a circumferential surface substantially parallel to said face.
11. A machine for reinforcing insoles, having, in combination, a work support, an

A machine for reinforcing insoles, having in combination, means for supporting, feeding and operating upon the marginal portion of the insole, including devices for forming a bead or crimp in the reinforce material and securing it to the insole, comprising two outside formers, one in advance of the other in the line of feed, and a single inside former, said inside former and one of said outside formers cooperating to bend the bead inward at an inclination to the surface of the insole.

A machine for reinforcing insoles, having in combination, means for supporting, feeding and operating upon the mar ginal portion of the insole, including devices for forming a bead or crimp in the reinforce material and securing it 'to the insole, comprising tWo outside formers, one in advance of the other in the line of feed, and a single inside former, said inside former and the second of said outside formers engaged by the insole during the feed being constructed and arranged to engage the head from base to top and bend it inward at an inclination to the surface of the insole.
