To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT E. J'OBENSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Northfield, in the county of Rice and State above the mouth of the well, where they are readily accessible, and which pump operates to compress air and force it'downwardly in the well casing and cause the compressed air toforce up water from the well casing through the delivery pipe of the pump.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical centralsectional view of apump constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, of the same on a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line bb of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line c-c of Fig. 1.-
In accordance with my invent-ion, I provide a cylinder 1 which is open at its lower end, and is adapted to be fitted on the upper end of the well casing 2, and to be secured to the well casing. as by means of suitable screws or bolts 3. The said cylinder has an internal shoulder engaged by a gasket 5 the gasket fitting on the upper end of the well casing and efi'ecting an airtight joint between the well casing and the lower portion of the cylinder, as will be understood.
A piston 6 is arranged to operate vertically in the cylinder, and is here shown as comprising a pair of members 7, between which a packing leather or other element 8 is arranged, the said members being secured together by bolts 9, and the lower member being also provided with an annular packing 10 which operates in the cylinder. which is connected by a. pitman 14: to the piston, the said pitman being pivotally connected to the piston, as at 15. At one end of the shaft isa gear 16 which engages a smaller gear 17 on the drive shaft 18, the drive shaft being here shown as provided with a suitable power pulley 19. Any other suitable means may, however, be employed for operating the crank shaft and driving the piston thereby, within the scope of my invention.
An air chamber 20 is arranged around the upper portion of the cylinder 4 and is provided at one side at its lower end with a delivery pipe '21 which is here shown as provided with a spout.
A receiving pipe 22 is arranged in the wellfca'sing, extends downwardly therein to a point a suitable distance below the level of the column of water or other liquid in the well casing, and is provided at its lower end with an upwardly opening valve 23 which constitutes the inlet valve. A discharge pipe 24 is arranged-in and extends through the receiving pipe. its lower end being open and arranged a slight distance above the bottom of the receiving pipe, and its upper end extending through the closed upper end of the receiving pipe and being connected by a member 25 to the lower portion of the air chamber 20, from which the delivery pipe or spout 21 extends.
"The head 26 of the cylinder is provided with a centrally arranged standard 29, the lower portion of which forms a duct, and the upper portion of which has a spindle 30, on which a horizontally arranged ratchet wheel 31 is mounted for revolution. The said ratchet wheel is provided at points atdifierent distances from its center with tappets 32, 33 whichproject from the lower side thereof, and these tappets are arranged at opposite points of the ratchet wheel. A pipe 34 leads from the duct 29 to the receiving pipe 22, discharges into the upper end of the receiving pipe, and is provided at a point above the cylinder head and below the ratchet wheel 31 with an oscillating valve 35, which, when in one position, closes the pipe 34:, and when in another position, opens the same. This valve which is preferably a threeway valve has an arm 36 which projects from one side of its spindle. A pipe 37 which is similar to thepipe 3% connects the duct 29 to the upper end of the well casing, and is provided with a valve- 38 which is similar to the valve 35, and has an arm 39 connected to the arm 36 ofthe valve 35 by a rod 40. These valves 35, 38 are arranged reversely, so that when one is in open position, the other is closed. The
stem of the valve 38 also hasa pair of opp'ositely extending tappetarms 4:1, 42 which are, respectively, arranged in the paths of r the tappets 32, 33 of the ratchet wheel 31.

The operation of the pump will be as follows: When the piston makes its first cycle and makes it suction stroke air will be drawn from casing '2, and in making its return or compression stroke, the valve '23 w ll close when the piston makes its suction stroke 3 again the air will be drawn from casing 2 and forced into chamber 22 when the piston makes its compression; stroke. This operation is repeatedagain and again as the'piston reciprocates, the valve 23 acting always in time. Hence, during the continuedoper- 'ation of the air and compressing piston in the cylinder, compressed air is at one time forced into the well casing and at another time is forced into the receiving pipe, thus causing the receiving pipe to be first filled with water by the action of the compressed During the next cycle of the,
air in the well casing, and then emptied by the action of the compressed air directly in the receiving pipe, and above the column of water therein.
While I have herein shown and described apreferred form of my invention, I will have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion andconstruc tion of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the'scope of the appended claims.
