Lettersl are formed in the paint ornon-transparent material to enable light rays to pass therethrough. A slide 7 5 is guided in lips formed with the hinged front frame.
A source of adjustable illumination, preferably an electric bulb 76. is located in the signal box. The signal box with its bulb and appurtenances I designate a signal.

To use the invention the operator-of the motor vehicle bears onthe foot pedal 35 which sets the foot brakes 44 in the ordinary way. The handle 93 of the switch being in its closed position. the flexible contact piece 56 is brought in contact with. the plate 64 which closes the circuit for the electric bulb T6. and energizes the electric ap- Upon the release of the foot pedal 35 the flexible contaca piece 56 separates from the plate (is and bhe electric circuit for the bulb is broken and consequently the illumination in the signal box ceases. It will be observed that ,the foot brakes coact with the illumination in the signal box, so 'tl'iat when the foot brakes are set the signal is in plain View.
The. slide 75 is pulled outas shown in Fi' s. 3 and 6 when the signal is used and closed to prevent injury to the box when said signal is not used. The hinged frame 70 allows the signal box to be opened for the pur ose of cleaning and adjustment of the bulb 26.
