UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WINFIELD S. CHAPPELL, 33., F MYSTIC, CONNECTICUT.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Application filed April 9, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVLvFInLD SCOTT CHAPPELL, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mystic, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners,,of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to music leaf turners, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character wherein the music is supported and its leaves turned automatically when the occasion requires so that the operator can play the musical instrument without inconvenience resultant ordinarily from handling the music for the turning of its leaves by hand.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so that the perfect Working of the same is assured, thus relieving the operator of the burden of manually turning the leaves of the sheet music.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a music leaf turner constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the operating lever. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the slidable locking bolt.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the music leaf turner comprises a back section 10, preferably made from wood, and has mounted on its front face spaced from the bottom edge thereof a rail 11 which forms a rest for the sheet music, the said rail being cut away medially thereof to accommodate a Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 20,264.
bearing 12 in which is journaled a rotatable shaft 13, the same being also journaled in a bracket fixed. to the upper edge of the section and also forming the upper bearing for the said shaft. Fixed to the upper edge of the section 10 on opposite sides and spaced from the bracket 14: are perforated cars 15 through which is trained a retaining cord 16, the same being also trained through slots or openings 17 formed in the rail 11 so as to extend across the cover pages of the sheet music when supported upon the rail 11 to hold the music in position thereon, the ends of the cord 16 being knotted at 18 so as to prevent the said ends from pulling through the openings 17 in the rail 11.
Fixed to the section 10 below the rail 1]. is a housing 19 into which extends the lower end of the shaft 13, the latter being fitted with a pinion 20 meshing with a turning gear 21 fixed to a counter shaft 22 journaled in the said housing 19 of the section 10 at right angles to the shaft 13, the said counter shaft 22 being extended through the front of the housing 19 without the same and has fixed thereto a cross handle 23 so that the shaft 22 can be manually rotated for imparting similar movement to the shaft 13 for the turning of sheet music in a manner presently described.
Formed on the shaft 22 is a wing 24 to which is connected one end of a coiled retractile spring 25, the latter having its opposite end suitably fixed at 26 within the housing 19, and this spring is designed to automatically rotate the shaft 22 in one direction when the said spring has become tensioned for the rotation of the shaft 13 to efiect the turning of the sheet of music. Mounted in a guideway 27 formed in the housing 19 is a slidable locking bolt 28, the same adapted to be moved into the path of movement of the wings 24 so as to lock the shaft 22 when under tension of the spring the bolt 28 being moved to locking position under the action of a coiled spring 29 seated in the guideway 27, the said bolt 28 being limited in its movement by means of a stop pin 30 disposed transversely of the guideway 27 and mounted in the housing 19. Pivotally supported in a slot 31 in the front wall of the housing 19 is a releasing lever 32, the inner end of which is loosely connected with the bolt 28 so that the latter can be moved to release position on actuating the said lever 32, the pivot 33 for the lever 32 being suitably mounted in the front wall of the housing 19. I
Formed on the shaft 13 are a plurality of fingers or arms 3% against which rests the loose leaf of the music to be turned thereby. Also fixed on the shaft 13 are spaced spring clips which are adapted to fasten the sheet of music at its edge neXt to the shaft 18 while the arms rest against the rear side of the music sheet, the said clips 35 being designed to prevent the displacement of the latter.
The handle 23 is turned to rotate the shaft 22, which in turn rotates the shaft 13 so as to position the sheet of music at the right hand side of the music leaf turner, and the bolt 28 automatically engages the wing 24 for locking the shaft 22 to hold the sheet of music in this position. Now when it is desired to turn the sheet of music the operator manipulates the lever 32 in a direction to retract the bolt 28 which frees the wing 2i and the tension of the spring 29 will autoniatically rotate the shaft 22 which in turn rotates the shaft 13 so that the sheet of music is swung from right to left. To turn back the sheet it is only necessary to turn the handle 23 in a directiton which will rotate the shafts 13 and 22 so that the sheet of music will be turned from left to right, as will be clearly apparent.
Fixed to the bottom of the housing 19 is a spring clip 86 which permits the detachable fastening of the music leaf turner upon the music rack of a piano, organ, or the like, or upon a music stand.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted;
What is claimed is:
A music leaf turner comprising a support, a housing on said support, a shaft journaled on the support in spaced parallel relation thereto, a counter shaft journaled in the housing at right angles to the first-named shaft, gear connections between the shafts, a wing formed on said counter shaft, a spring connected with said wing for tensioning the counter shaft when rotated in one direction, means for locking the counter shaft when under tension, arms on the firstnamed shaft and adapted for engagement with the sheet of music, clips on the said first-named shaft for fastening the sheet of music when engaged by the arms, means for releasing the locking means, and a cord 3 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of latents,
