PROTECTIVE COVERING OR ARMOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. Me, 1915.
Application filed October 23, 1911, Serial No. 656,200. Renewed May 18, 1914.. Serial No. 839,426.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that I, O'r'ro P. HOUBEN, a subject of Germany, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protective Coverings or Armor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in protective means or armor for flexible cable and hose and the object is to produce an armor which will afford complete protection to the cable or hose and which will give continuous and uniform protection even when the cable is bent in short bends and which possesses other advantages hereinafter more fully pointed out.
Vith the above object in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a side elevation partly in section showing my invention applied to an insulating tubing; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the invention in its application to a flexible armored cable; Fig. 3, a similar view showing a slightly modified construction applied to a steam hose, and Fig. 4, also a side elevation partly in section showing my improved armor used in connection with a rubber hose.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, my armor or protective covering consists of a shaped wire 1 which is wound spirally around the cable or hose to be protected. In cross section this wire has a flat base and a rounded outer surface of such a type that when it is wound upon the tube with the edges of the base of one section in contact with the edges of the adjacent section, there is left between, a seat to receive a round wire 2 which is also wound spirally. Thus the wire tube covers the joint between adjacent sections of the primary wire 1 and an eXterior surface is presented formed of a number of curved portions whereby it is impossible for a nail or other sharp implement to penetrate to the tubing or cable. Further it is impossible for the outer or secondary wire 2 to be pushed or bent in so as to injure the core of the cable by an external force. 1
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the primary wire 3 has its base elongated and the secondary wire 4 is flattened somewhat. The principle however, is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. An outer covering of rubber or other material may be applied as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be observed that with this protective armor it is impossible for a nail or any sharp object to penetrate into the hose or cable for the reason that there are no interstices or openings through which it could enter. An electric cable provided with this armor would have increased flexibility over types now in use on account of the short spiraling as compared with the ordinary round wires laid in long pitched spirals and also over metal strips which are now generally used.
It will be understood that the shape of the wires as shown in the drawing could be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A protective covering for cable or hose comprising a primary wire having a central portion and a projecting base wrapped spirally around the hose or cable, the bases of the convolutions of the primary wire being in contact to form a continuous protective covering, and a secondary wire wrapped spirally around the hose or cable in the spaces between the central portion of the primary wire and on the projecting base portions of the latter to cover the contacting edges thereof.
2. A protective covering for cable or hose comprising a primary wire wrapped spirally around the hose or cable having a rounded central portion and a laterally projecting base, the bases of the convolutions of the primary wire being in contact to form a continuous protective covering, and a rounded secondary wire wrapped spirally about the cable or hose between the central portion of the primary wire.
3. A protective covering for cable or hose comprising a primary wire wrapped spirally around the hose or cable, and a secondary wire wrapped spirally around the cable or hose between the sections of the primary wire, said primary wire having portions extending beneath and forming a In testimony whereof, I affix my signature seat for the secondary Wire, the extending in the presence of two witnesses.
portions of the convolutions 0f the primary Wire being in contact to form a continuous OTTO HOUBEN protective covering, said secondary Wire Witnesses: coverlng the contacting edges of the extend- ROY W. Boss, mg portions of the prlmary W1re. C. G. RQETZEL.
