Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 11, 1913. Serial No. 773,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. GADKE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Bromhead, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle Boxings or Sleeves; and I do hereby declare the clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in axle boxings or sleeves, and has particular application to a boxing designed especially for use in connection with the furrow wheel axle'of a sulky plow.
In the usual type of sulky plow, the front furrow wheel axle extends through a vertical sleeve or bearing fastened at theside of the plow frame, and by means of a lever the frame of the plow may be raised and lowered to regulate the depth of the fur- .row. After the plow has been in use for some time it frequently happens that through the accumulation of rust and other matter especially dust, created while soil is turned by the plow, the vertical section of the furrow axle binds in the sleeve so that the friction between the axle and the sleeve is so great that it is exceedingly diiiicult for a man operating the lever to operate the parts to raise and lower the frame'to regulate the depth of the furrow being plowed.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to so construct thisverticalaxle sleeve and provide the same with such antifriction bearings, as to enable the axle to be readily shifted relative to the same by the operation of the lever.
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the bearings within the sleeve, to enable the latter to be fastened to the plow frame, in the ordinary manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an axle mounting which will embody in its construction the desired features of simplicity, durability, efficiency and convenience.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail the numeral 1 indicates the furrow wheel axle as an entirety, the lower end of which carries the furrow wheel 2, while the upper end may be provided with a bracket or collar 3 to which a pole may be attached, if desired.
The sleeve for the axle is indicated as an entirety by the numeral 4 and it is designed to be fastened to the side of the plow frame by means of the brackets 5. This sleeve is formed with a quadrant rack 6 cast integral therewith, while 7 indicates the usual operating lever pivoted at its lower end as at 8.
The numeral 9 indicates a link bar which connects the lever to the collar 3 at the top of the axle 1. The lever is provided with the usual locking bars operated by the pivoted hand grip 10.
My invention is directed particularly to the construction of the sleeves 4, through which the vertical section of the axle 1 extends. In the present instance this sleeve comprises a tubular body having the wall thereof fluted or corrugated as at 11, .and in the present instance the sleeve is formed of eight vertical corrugated rib sections. At each end the tube is bedded in a' casting or head 12, while 13 designates a cap screwed onto or otherwise fitting over the head at each end. At each end of each rib or corrugation 11 I form the interior wall thereof with a relatively short longitudinal groove or recess 14 for the reception of a ball bearing 15. It will be seen that the ball recesses do not extend the entire length of their rib or corrugation so that the top ball bearings cannot drop to the bottom of the sleeve, but will be properly positioned to eliminate friction on the shaft or axle l at the top of the sleeve.
By the use of my invention, the frame may be readily raised and lowered by the operating lever under control of the operator, as the liability of the sleeve binding on the adjacent portion of the axle is obviated.
