Description

W. AGER.
Millstone Dress No. 11,636. Patented Sept. 5, 1854.
- Dresses for Cleaning Grain; and I do here- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILSON AGER, OF RHORSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILLSTONE-DRESS FOR CLEANING GRAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WILSON Assn, of Rhorsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Millstoneby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and'operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the stone. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures, denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in giving the face of the stone, a dress composed entirely of cracks, running as will be hereafter described, so as to form reverse drafts; for the purpose of turning the grain and revolving it on both longer and shorter axes, and also rendering the operation of longer duration, thereby thoroughly removing the adhering impurities from the grain as will be fully set forth in the following description.
In the drawings a is the face of the stone, divided into four parts, by the cracks I), each of which divisions is traversed by the cracks 0 respectively parallel to each other in the same division. The faces of both runner and bed stone or dressed in this manner, and by the reverse drafts which they cause; the outward draft being equal to the inward, the grain is revolved on both its short and long axes, and is kept on the verge of the stone, much longer than by any other form of dress. The stone presents a far greater rubbing surface than is possessed by stones cut up by furrows, and ad- 11,636, dated September 5, 1854.
mits therefore of being diminished in diameter and still perform better than large stones haying the ordinary dress.
In operating these stones the grain is submitted to their action in the usual manner, and by the rubbing of the grain between them the adhering impurities are separated. In this respect there is no point of difference between this and the ordinary methods of cleaning grain. But the advantage possessed by the above described dress, consists in the continued rotation of the grain on its opposite axes for a greater length of time than the ordinary dress of such stones will admit of, thereby insuring a more thorough cleaning, than can be obtained on stones of great outward draft. The economizing of effective surface of the stone by dispensing with the usual furrows, renders a small stone capable of retaining the grain much longer when dressed as I propose than would a large stone with any of the usual forms of dress.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein described dress consisting entirely of cracks, having inclinations as shown in the drawing, for causing reverse drafts, so as to turn the grain and revolve it both on its longest and shortest axes, for the purpose of cleaning and scouring said gram.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
WILSON AGER.
