FRANK L. rouranor CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS.
ENVELOP.
Application filed May 20, 1915.
To all wlwmz't may concern Be it known that I, FRANK L. TOUPAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelops and more particularly to closures therefor.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel form of flap closure for retaining the envelop sealed against. accidental opening thereof, and which may be opened without mutilating the same.
Another object is to provide an envelop of this character which is simple in construction, thus reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum, and which is efiective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an envelop constructed in accordance with the invention, the closure therefor being shown in blank. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the closure in closing position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the closure in opened position. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, it will be seen that the body portion of the envelop comprises the front section 10, overlapping side flaps 11 and 12 and the end flap 13 which is adapted to be bent over and secured to the side flaps or sections 11 and 12 for closing one end of the body portion. The side section 11 is provided with a transversely extending slot 14 spaced from the longitudinal edges of said section while the flap 12 is provided with a slot 15, one end of which communicates with the longitudinal edge of said flap and registers with the slot 14 to form an opening for receiving a tongue presently tobe. described.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' 17' with the Patented Dec. *2, 1915. Serial No. 29,294;
g The end of the body portion opposite the flap 13 is provided with a flap closure 16 which is preferably rounded upon its edge, as shown, and which terminates, at its cen tral portion, in a locking tongue 17 which preferably extends longitudinally of the envelop and comprises lateral wings 18 formed upon the longitudinal edges of the tongue and adapted to be folded on the dotted lines 19 in overlapping relation to each other to form a tongue of treble thickness, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, the wings 18 are cut as shown at 19' for a short distance on the fold lines-19 adjacent the junction of the tongue flap 16 and adhesive is applied to the entire surface of the wings and tongue with the exception of the narrow strip indicated by 20. After the wings are secured together, this strip 20, together with the adthe wing, forms a locking' disengagement of the locking tongue fronr the slots, and in order to open said envelop it is necessary to insert a pencil or other implement between the flap 16 and the side flaps 11 and 12, and by exerting a slight pressure on the latter flaps, the upper edges of the slots 14 and 15 may be disengaged from the locking groove, thus permitting the withdrawal of the tongue 17 without mutilating the envelop in any respect.
In Fig. 6, there is shown a slight modification in which the flap 16 is provided adjacent the inner end of the tongue 17 with a reinforcing tab 21 secured to the rear face of said flap. The slots 14 and 15 in the side flaps also having a reinforcing element 22 surrounding the same.
I claim 1. An envelop comprising a body portion having one open end and a transverse slot, a closure for said open end having a longitudinally extending portion consisting of lateral wings'folded in overlapping relation and having themajor' portion of their surfaces secured together whereby to form a tongue of a width equal to or less than the width of said slot, and having an inner free extension for engagement with the edge of a free extension upon its inner face and at the body at one side of the slot nearest the its inner end, said tongue being of a Width said open end of the body. 7 equal to or less than the width of the slot 10 2. An envelop comprising a body portion through which it extends, said extension enhaving one open end and a transverse slot, gaging the edge of the body along the side and a closure for said open end consisting of said slot nearest the open end of the body.
of a longitudinally extending tongue having FRANK L. TOUPAL.
