To all. whom it may concern Be it known that I, vWILLIAM H. MCALLIS- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newberry, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use theV same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilcation.`
rThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in casters and consists in the provision of a simple and eiicient means whereby the caster may be held at different elevations, being held in an adjusted position by friction means.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically deiined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the object to which the caster is fastened by `means of screws A', said screws engagingV and holding the plate B in place and which has a circular outlined rib B thereon and a central conical-shaped flange B2 adapted to receive the beveled head C of the swivel bolt D, which latter is shouldered as at D and upon which shoulder the washer E rests which is so shaped as to form raceways for the balls F and the cylindrical bearings Gr which rest upon the horizontally disposed portion H of the casing H having oppositely disposed walls which are slotted as at H2 leaving narrow resilient strips H3 which are allowed to yield a little under pressure in a manner to be presently described for'the purpose of holding the caster at dierent elevations.
Said swiveled boltv passes through an opening in the member H and a washer G2 is mounted upon the bolt and held by the head C3 thereof against the under surface of the laterally projecting portion K of the bracket member K', which latter has its lower end K2 bent at an angle and extending underneath the bottom of the casing H. Plates, designated by Letters L and N, one of which is shown in Fig. 6, are provided with lugs O projecting from the ends thereof and which serve as supports for the plates by their resting upon the upper edges of the yoke Q which supports the spindle R of the caster wheel S. Said plates, it will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2, are positioned one upon either side of the bracket member'K and serve as frictional clamping plates for engagement with the same to hold the yoke Q in different positions.
A lug T projects from the yoke and forms a convenient means whereby the yoke may be raised slightly by the foot of a person when it is desired to adjust the caster, the adjustment being permitted by raising the rear end of the yoke to allow the plates L and N to frictionally disengage the bracket member K. A roller iV is mounted upon a pin vW and is frictionally in contact with one end'of the casing H and at the lower end of the face engaged by said roller is a projection H2, forming a stop to limit the movement of the yoke in one direction.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, I have shown a slight modification of the member holding the raceway J, consisting of a plate J having a hollow conical-shaped boss J2 for the reception of the swiveled member J3 which takes the place of the swiveled bolt shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In operation, when itis desired to adjust the yoke carrying the caster to different elevations, it maybe done by the operator raising upon the l-ug T which will throw the yoke away from the friction engaging plates N and L, thus allowing the yoke to be elevated as may be desired and, after pressure is relieved from the lug T, the yoke will be held by the lower marginal edge thereof frictionally engaging the plate L,
throwing the weight of the caster against the friction plates and the roller W'. When the caster is adjusted to any particular position, it may be operated in the usualrrnanner as other casters.
What I claim to be new is l. A caster comprising a swiveled casing and a resilient bracket mounted thereon, a
Vyoke with a caster wheel journaled therein,
swiveled support for the same, aA resilient bracket member mounted in the casing and spaced apart therefrom, a caster carrying yoke movable about said casing, plates engaging said bracket and against which the yoke is adapted to bear, a roller carried by the yoke, cooperating with the plates to hold. theyoke in adjusted position, and a projection upon the casing to limit the move' ment of the yoke in one direction.
4:. A caster comprising a casing andv a swiveledvsupport for the same, said casing having slots therein forming resilient strips, a resilient bracket member connected to the casing, a plate between saidl strips and said bracket, a caster carrying yoke, and a friction, plate interposed between thesame and said resilient bracket, and an anti-friction roller carried by the yoke and against which the edge of the casing is adapted to bear.
5. A caster comprising a casing and a swiveled support for the same, said casing having slots therein forming'resilient strips, a resilient bracket member connected tothe casing, a plate between said strips and said bracket, a caster carrying yoke, a friction plate interposed between the same and said resilient bracket, an anti-friction roller carried by the yoke and againstV which the edge of the casing is adapted to bear-,and` a projection upon the yoke serving as a means' for throwing the same out of frictional contact with said plate.

an angled resilient bracket-member mounted upon the casing and spaced apart from said strips, the lower end'of the bracket member being angled, a caster carrying yoke movable Y about the casing, plates .mounted one between the resilient strip and bracket member and the other intermediate the latter and 'the yoke which bears frictionally against the same,lan anti-friction wheel mounted upon the yoke and bearing against the opposite side of the casing, and means for limiting the movement of the yoke in one direction. A caster comprising a casing having a transverse apertured portion and swivel mounting therefor, said yokehaving slots in the walls thereof forming a resilient strip, an angled resilient bracket member mounted upon the casing and spaced apart from said strips, the lower end'of the bracket member being angled, a caster carrying yoke movableabout therkcasing, plates mounted one between the resilient strip and bracket mem ber and the other intermediate the latter and the yoke which bears frictionally against the same, an anti-friction wheel mounted uponV the yoke and bearing against the opposite side of the casing, means for limiting the movement of the yoke in one direction, and a lug projecting from the yoke forming means for raising the same out of frictional engagement with the adjacent plate.
