Description

J. M. BARNETT.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 15. 1915.
Patented Nov. 30, 1915.
m ggg i TJ'NTTED @TATE PATEN JOHN M. BARNETT, OF LAWRENCEVILLE, GEORGIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed March 15, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawreneeville, in the county of Gwinnett and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its principal object to provide a quick-adjusting wrench which may be easily and quickly moved to the desired adjustment so as to fit nuts of different sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will permit the sliding jaw of the wrench to easily move to the desired position and which, when the handle is gripped and the wrench is in operation, will lock the jaw against movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench which when released may be easily moved to fit nuts of larger or smaller diameter.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal partly sectional view thereof, taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of- Fig. 2 with the jaws omitted.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the shank of the wrench which is formed at one end with the head 2. This head is provided with the projection 3 which is formed with the jaw face 4:. The reduced extension 5 is formed at the end of the shank 1 opposite the head 2 and is provided with a plurality of oppositely disposed notches 6, which form ribs 7 which cooperate in holding the slidable jaw in various adjusted positions. A suitable head 8 is carried at the extreme outer end of the reduced extension 5 and is designed to limit the downward movement of the slidable jaw to prevent the same from becoming displaced.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 14,470.
The slidable jaw, designated generally by the numeral 9, comprises the sleeve 10 having formed thereon at one end the angular extension llwhioh is provided with the jaw face 12, which cooperates with the jaw face 4 1n gripping the article to be turned. This sleeve 10 is formed with the opposed openings 13 and has formed integral therewith the enlargement 1d at the end opposite the jaw 9, which is recessed as at 15 for the reception of the gripping portions which will be more fully hereinafter described.
The gripping portions hereinbefore referred to comprise the bodies 16 which are U-shaped in transverse cross section and are pivoted in the recesses 15 in the enlargement 1 1 as at 17. Carried by the gripping portions are the leaf springs 18, which are designed to bear against the shank 1 and force the gripping portions open and into the position illustrated in the drawings. Formed at the extreme outer ends of each of the gripping portions are the angular extensions 19, each of which is formed with an opening 20, one wall of which is provided with the edge 21 which engages in the notches 6 to abut the ribs 7 and thereby lock the jaw against movement. One of the extensions 19 is formed with the flange 22 which is designed to limit the outward movement of the same.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use when it is desired to adjust the sliding jaw of the wrench, the same is moved so that it engages the surface of the nut to be turned and upon gripping the members 16 it will be apparent that the edges 21 will engage in the notches 6 and abut the ribs 7, thereby locking the jaws against movement. The harder the pull on the wrench,
the greater will be the gripping action, and
it will be evident that the jaws will be more firmly held against relative movement. When it is desired to adjust the wrench to a different size of nut or other article to be turned, it is apparent that the gripping portions are released and the jaws spread to the proper position, and upon grasping the gripping portions 16 it will be apparent that the edges 21 will engage a different portion of the reduced extension 5.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A wrench of the class described comrisin a shank a stationar aw formed on b one end of the shank, a reduced extension formed at the opposite end of the shank and provided with a plurality of teeth, a sleeve slidable on the shank, a movable jaw carried by the sleeve, gripping members having one of their ends inturned, pivotally secured to the lower end of the sleeve and positioned on opposite sides of the shank, their inturned ends cooperating with the teeth formed on the reduced end of the shank, springs connected to the gripping members having downwardly curved portions engaging the shank for normally holding the gripping members out of engagement with the teeth.
2. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a stationary jaw formed at one end of the shank, a sleeve slidably mounted over said shank, a movable jaw formed at one end of said sleeve, the lower end of said sleeve provided with a flange, inwardly formed recesses, gripping members pivotally secured in the recesses in the lower end of the sleeve and extending downwardly therefrom, angular extensions at the free end of the gripping members to engage teeth at the reduced portion of the shank and hold the sleeve and movable aw members stationary with relation to the stationary aw member, and springs carried by the gripping members for engaging the shank to normally hold the gripping members out of engagement with the rib.
3. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a stationary jaw formed on one end of the shank, a reduced extension formed at theopposite end of the shank and being provided with a plurality of notches forming teeth, a sleeve slidable on the shank, a movable jaw carried by the upper end of the sleeve, the lower end of the sleeve being enlarged and provided with a recess, gripping members pivotally mounted in the recesses at the lower end of the sleeve, and extending downwardly therefrom, angular extensions at the free ends of the'gripping membersto engage around the reduced extension of the shank and engage the teeth to hold the sleeve and movable jaw members stationary with relation to the stationary jaw member, and curved springs rigidly secured to the inner face of J. C. LANFORD, W. T. ROBERTS.
