Be it known that I, FRANCIS D.V ALLGooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leesville, in the parish of Vernon and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces; and I 'doV hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.
This invention relates to a wagon con-v struction and more particularly to the construction of the shafts cipal objectV of my invention is to provide a shaft construction whereby there is no mortise and tenon connection between the shaft and the cross piece, suitable parts being provided forming` a strong connection therebetween.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brace adapted to be secured to the cross piece and shaft of a wagon for forming a strong connection therebetween.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which,

Fig. 2, represents a horizontal, sectional view through o-ne end of one of the shafts and the adjacent portion of the cross piece, strengthening bars being shown on the braces. Fig. 3, represents a top plan view of one end of o-ne of the shafts and the adjacent portion of the cross piece showing the use of a modified form of the brace. Fig. 4, represents a perspective view of one of the shafts, the cross piece and brace being removed. Fig. 5, represents a perspective view of one end of the cross piece having the brace secured thereto, said cross piece being removed from the shafts, and Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of a modified form of brace.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, shafts 5 are connected near their ends by a cross piece 6, which is squared off at its ends and which is not connected to the shafts by mortise and tenon joint as is the usual construction. Braces which are in the thereof and the prinform of strips of metal bent at their middle portion to form right angle arms are secured at each end of cross piece 6 on opposite sides thereof by means of bolts 8, which pass 'through openings in the arms of the braces and which also pass through openings in the cross piece 6, a pair of bolts connecting the arms ofthe braces lying against the cross piece at opposite ends of said arms, said bolts passing through both armsand through the cross piece. Shafts 5 are provided with openings 9 adapted to register with openings `10 in the oppositely extending arms of braces '7, and bolts 11 are passed through said oppositely extending arms and through the openings in the shafts for securing the bracesto the shafts and thereby providing a strong connection between the cross piece and the shafts and one which is free from the mortise and tenon joint ordinarily used.
As shown in Fig. 2, the braces are strengthened by the addition of a bar 18, connecting the arms of each brace 7, at their outer ends, and secured in place by means of the same bolts which connect the outer ends of the arm to the cross piece and shafts respectively, said bolts passing through the ends of the rods, said ends being bent to lie fiat against the brace arms.
The brace illustrated in Figs. 3 and 6 comprises a strip of metal bent at right angles, and from the arms 12 thereof are stamped tongues 13, said tongues being inwardly bent from the outer ends of the arms and toward each other, one of said tongues being provided with a groove 14 in which a flange or rib 15, formed on the end of the opposite tongue is adapted to be engaged. The arms 12 are provided at their opposite ends with openings 16 through which bolts are'adapted to pass for securing the cross piece to the shaft similar to the manner previously described. Should the shafts become warped or bent from their original position relative to the cross piece when the brace illustrated in Figs. 3 and 6 is used, 1t is evident that the tongues 13 will become somewhat warped relative to each other and that a blow at the meeting edges of the tongues 13 will force them into their original position and will thus restore the shafts to their original position relative to the cross piece. However, it is evident that because of the tongues 13 forming a brace for the brace proper, that a very strong construction lis provided and that an exceedingly strong 1" `nient With their exertion on the shaft will be necessary for warping the saine relatively to -tlie ,Gross piece.
