IMPROVEM ENT IN LAMP-FILLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 1,6l 2, dated August 29, 1854.

Be it known that I, C. R. LANDMANN, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Quick Safety- Filler for Lamps and other Purposes; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in arranging in the tube or nozzle of the filler a piston-rod having a button on it at about inidway the length of the rod, and ground on its upper surface, so as to fit a seat in the lower side ofthe filler tube or nozzle, so that by means of a spiral spring on the piston-rod the vent to the tube is always kept closed by the button. In combination with this arrangement for discharging the fluid from the ller is another rod in it, directly under the piston-rod, and passing down through the bottom of the filler, so as by the elevation or raising the button on the end of it, in consequence of the piston-rod being forced against its upper end, the air enters the filler and causes the :duidin it to discharge freely into the lamp, and on reversal of the position of the filler the spiral springs on the rods closes the air-vent and nozzle-orifice.
To describe my invention more particularly I will refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this schedule, the same letters of reference, wherever they occur, referring to the same parts.
Figure 1 is a vertical cut section of the filler and safety apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the filler, showing the upper end ofthe piston-rod projecting beyond the nozzle of the filler.
Letter A is the filler-case, made of any suitable inetal for such purposes. In the neck of the filler-case is secured a cap, B, to the upper side of which is the nozzle O ofthe filler-case. Arranged in the filler-cap is a piston-rod, D. On this rod is arranged a button, E, which is ground or turned down, so as to Iit a seat cut in the lower side of the cap D. On the rod is also a spiral spring, F, attached at one end to the rod and at the other to the tube G, surrounding thelower end of the rod. The length of this rod is governed by the length of the nozzle and depth of the filler, as it is requisite that its upper end should project beyond the end of the nozzle, so that by pressure against it the button is raised from off its seat, and its lower end forced against the upper end of the air-vent rod H in the bottom of the ller. This rod passes through the bottom of theiiller, and has a button, I, on it, arranged outside of the ller, the object of which is to close the space around the rod in consequence of the reaction of the spiral spring J, attached toit, on the pressure being removed.

Having now described my invention, I will proceed to state what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- The use of the safety-filling apparatus, made and operating substantially as here'inbefore set forth, in combination with a fillencase, for the purposes set forth.
