The presser bar slides in guides '18 depending from s yoke 19 forming pert of the sprinkler head. When the parts are placed in working position, with the valve 6 on its sent e, and the strut -9 on the valve G, the presser har is lowered until its lower end en ters the conical recess 1l in the' top of the strut, and then a screw 2O is screwed into en upper threaded recess in the yoke,J its lower end beering'down upon the upper end of' the bei', until a considerable pressure has been imparted by said screw1 to seid loer and is borne by` the strut. When the desired pressure has been attained, e rivet 21 is driven through the yoke and through the screw 20. rl`l1e strut sections are thus sul4 jected to a central bursting strain, by reason of being compressed between the conical enlargementA ofthe valve and the conical lower 'end of the presser bar.

The pressure of the water then violently forces up the valve 6 and disk 5, and these parts are pushed to one side by the rush oli the water. '1
Around the lower part of the presser ber is secured e rubber valve 2Q., the lowersurface of which is conical and continuous with the conical lower end oi thepresser har, and above said valve lingers 23 extend radially from a plate 24 secured to the presser bar above said valve, said fingers forming a distributer` the water being forced against the under side'o said lingers and dellected thereby to a considerable distance from the sprinkler heed. The sides of the yoke would ordinarily prevent the water from being deiected to the part of the room behind said sides, and in order to prevent this occurring l lthe' strut sections.

l am avvare that it has been proposed to separatestrut sections by means of the pressure from a spring `plate applied to said plate at. its center, but such pressure is only applied by the edge of the plate, and is not as effective as when applied, as in my invention. at all points of a conical surface. Furthermore l apply such pressure upon a conical surface bothat the top and bottom of the strut. vl/*hen pressure is applied at one end only of the strut, the friction of the other end against the supporting surfaceis so great to render it difiicult to separate T his objection isv overcome when the pressure is applied at both ends. Furthermore l hold the strut sections together by means of a plate consisting of sections held together by easily fusible metal along their edges, as contrasted "with prior devices in which the strut sections are held together by easily Jfusible solder applied to the broad surfaces of a band.` ln such case there is a very great probability of the parts of the retainer. 1which are held together by the-easily fusible solder, not separating when the solder is melted` on account' of the adhesion thereof caused by reason of corrosion of the surfaces, said surfaces being veryr considerable.
