To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whipping Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device for carrying and operating a whip, of the type designed to be attached to a vehicle to which a team of horses is hitched.
My object is to provide a device that will carry the whip in close proximity to the team and to operate it as designed and thus relieve the driver of the necessity of carrying it and yet it will be ready for use at all times, leaving the hands of the driver free to manipulate the lines to control the team and also to operate any machinery such as harvesters, dump wagons, riding plows, etc.
In the drawings herewith which are made a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of the device in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the whip support as mounted in the frame, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the handle supports. Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a modified form of this device, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional v1ew of the whip support illustrated in Fig. 4.
In the following detailed description of the drawings, numerals will be used, the same numerals indicating like parts throughout the several figures.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 indicates the tongue of a wagon or vehicle having a suitable aperture, in which is mounted a frame 2, the lower end 3 of which is threaded to receive a nut 4 and washer 5 beneath the tongue 1. A collar 6 having a suitable set screw 7 is mounted above and adapted to rest upon the tongue 1. By this construction the frame is adapted to be adjustably mounted in a vertical position through the tongue 1. The upper end 8 of the frame 2 is angularly ofiset and horizontally disposed, the end 9 being flat and ring-shaped to permit of the suitable circular opening 10 therethrough, the edge of which is beveled as at 11 to provide a suitable bearing edge having but a minimum amount of frictional surface. A suitable whip support 12 has centrally disposed and connected thereto, a ball 15 mounted in the opening 10 to permit of universal movement. The upper end of the support 12 has fastened thereto, suitable end of which is suitably apertured as at 22,-
is slidably mounted upon the frame 2 and secured in position by means of a set screw 23. A coil spring 24 is mounted, one end in the aperture 22 and the opposite'end in the lower aperture of the whip support 12. This coil spring 24 is adapted to resiliently retain the support in a vertical position. A handle 25 connected in the other aperture in the whip support 12, extends to a point adjacent the drivers seat 15 and has a. suitable hand grasp 26. This handle is passed through an aperture 26 in a support 27 and through the ring 29 at the lower end of a chain 30 which depends from an angular bracket 81 mounted on the body of the vehicle. This arrangement allows of a degree of play to the handle which permits of a universal movement of the whip support on the manipulation thereof against the action of the spring 24, the operator pulling, pushing or pressing to one side the grasp 26 of the handle to obtain this result.
In the modified form of my device shown in Figs. 4 and 5 a frame 1 is provided, comprising two vertical metal bars bent at right angles at their lower ends to form the base 2, while at their upper ends they are bent outwardly and upwardly a short distance, when the end is again bent to extend vertically. Adjacent the upper ends apertures provide bearings for a rotatable shaft 3. The two bars are positioned so that the base members extend laterally in opposite directions and are held in spaced relation at their lower ends by washers 1, and a short brace member 4 Braces 5 are interposed between the frame bars adjacent the bends therein and are bent to fit against the upper ends of the said bars and are provided with apertures which register with those in the ends of said bars. Interposed between the braces adjacent the bend in the bars of the frame is a short bar 6 provided with an aperture adapted to receive the hook of a spring 7. The bars of the frame, the braces, and the spacing washers are united by rivets to provide a rigid structure for the support of the operative mechanism of my invention.
Rotatively mounted within the apertures at the ends of the frame is the shaft 3 which supports the whip socket 3* and has its middle portion. squared in crosssection. The whip socket is mounted upon the shaft 3 and the squared portion thereof prevents the whip socket rotating on the said shaft, and consequently when the shaft is partially rotated it imparts an oscillating motion to the socket. Attached to the lower portion of the whip socket 3 and the top end of the bar 6 is a spiral spring 7 which acts to return the socket to a perpendicular position after the rotating shaft has turned it to one side or the other.
Positioned upon the top end of the whip socket is a clasp 8 formed of two resilient members secured by any preferred means to opposite sides of the whip socket, the free ends of the clasp members being held in operative position by a clamp detachably secured thereto by a set screw. The rotating shaft is secured within the apertures of the frame by a cotter pin 10.
A sleeve 11 is secured upon the rearwardly extending end of the rotating shaft by a cotter pin 12 passing through registering apertures in the said sleeve and shaft. The free end of the sleeve 11 is connected to a connecting rod 14: by a universal joint 13. The connecting rod extends from the rotating shaft to a point adjacent the drivers seat 15 and terminates in a hand grip 15, being supported at convenient intervals by upright standards attached to the vehicle as indicated at 16. The device is completed by inserting a whip 17 in the socket 3.
The frame is secured to the top of the tongue between the horses or at the side if one horse is used, by any preferred means. The driver, when he Wishes to apply the whip, turns the connecting rod a half turn by means of the hand grip. the rod communicating the rotary movement to the rotating shaft, which in turn oscillates the whip and strikes the horse. The driver then releases the hand grip and. the spring 7 returns the whip to an upright position.
H aving thus fully described my invention, it is believed that its construction, use and advantages are clearly set forth and further description is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as novel and wish to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a whip actuating device, a frame ad justably mounted upon the tongue of a vehicle and having its upper end angularly offset and horizontally disposed with a ring at its outer end, a whip support having a whip clamp at its upper end, a centrally disposed ball connection seated in the ring to permit universal movement of the whip support, an adjustable horizontal arm on the frame, a movably mounted handle on the whip support adapted to move it in varying directions, and a coiled spring connecting the lower end of the whip support and the horizontal arm and adapted to retain the whip support in a vertical. position.
2. In a whip actuating device an upright frame carrying a horizontally disposed ring shape member, a whip support having a centrally disposed ball seated in the ring shape member, a horizontally disposed arm adjustable-0n the upright frame, a spring connecting the lower end of the whip support with the horizontal arm, ail-angular bracket,
and a handle extending to near the drivers seat, centrally suspended from the bracket and connected at its forward end to the junction of the lower end of the whip support and the spring.
