Description

0. S. PULLIAM. UNDERFRAME CENTER SILL CONSTRUCTION FOR CARS AND THE LIKE.

OSWALD S. PUIILIAM, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
UNDERFRAME CENTER-SILL CONSTRUCTION FOR CARS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1%15.
Application filed September 23, 1909. Serial No. 519,131.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, OswALo S. PULLIAM, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframe Center-Sill Construction for Cars and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved under-frame construction for cars, and the like, and the present invention more particularly relates to av new and improved center-sill or a center-sill constructed in accordance with the principle of the cantilever.
An object of my invention is to depart from the usual and Well known truss construction and to substitute therefor, in a steel underframe for cars, and the like, a center-sill of cantilever construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate applications of my invention, F igure 1 is a perspective view of a car-body un derframe embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view particularly showing an end portion of the center-sill of a slightly modified form from that shown by Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings and first to the form of Fig. 1, the center-sill comprises two end-portions 2 and 3 each preferably formed as an integral casting and respectively designed to be mounted on and supported by the respective truck bolsters 1. As illustrated, both end-portions are formed with a center plate member 5 designed, when the end-portions are mounted on the truck-bolsters, to bear on the center plate members of saidbolsters. Each of the end-portions 2 and 3 comprises laterally extending members 6 and in the form of Fig. 1 members 6 constitute a body-bolster. The casting constituting the end-portions of the center-sill projects forwardly and rearwardly of the respective truck bolsters 41 for about an equal distance and the outer members are provided with means or members 7 adapted to engage the draft-rigging, not shown. In Fig. 1, I have shown the forward end-portion of the center-sill extended to and located in the respective end-sills 8 of the body underframe. By this arrangement, and particularly with the free end of the outer member extending into the opening 8 in the end sill, shearing strains at the point of connection of such outer members and the end sill will be taken up, in addition to which, the draw-bar connection is retained out of contact with the sides of the opening and the lateral strains thereof placed on the outer members, the latter, being in turn supported by such side walls of the opening.
The end portions 2 and 3, of the centersill, are connected by suitable connecting means 9. In the drawing I have shown two members of channel form as the connecting means, with said members riveted to the end-portions 2 and 3. The laterally extending or cross sills 10 are secured to the central or connecting member of the center-sill and extend outwardly therefrom to the respective side-sills 11.
In the form of Fig. 2 I have shown a slightly different construction of the end portions of the center-sill from that shown by Fig. 1. In this latter form I have shown the laterally extending members 6 arranged between the middle of the end portions of the sill and the forward and rear ends thereof.
What I claim is:
1. In an underframe construction for cars and in combination, a pair of body bolster castings each having integral members on opposite sides of the bolster and extending in correspondence with the longitudinal center of the underframe, said members being of substantially equal length, individual side and end sills, said side sills connecting corresponding bolster ends and having an integral length substantially equal to the distance between the free ends of the outer members of the casting, said end sills having openings to receive the ends of said outer members and being secured to the ends of the side sills, and means for connecting the free ends of the inner members of the castings, said means and the inner and outer members of the casting constituting the center sill structure.
2. In an underframe construction for sills, the free ends of the outer members excars and in combination, a pair of body tending into openings in the end sills. bolster castings each having a bolster mem- In testimony whereof I afliX my signature ber and integral oppositely-extending memin presence of two witnesses. bers to provide a substantially balanced con- OSWALD S.
