F5 6 I 7l WITNESSES INVENTOI? ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
ABRAHAM A. SIMON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Application filed December 16, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM A. SIMON, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at 1831 Lexington avenue, New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music leaf turners or to appliances adapted to turn leaves of books or for similar purposes and it consists of certain novel features to be operated by the foot or hand of the user and provides for the selection of the separate carrying means for the leaves when they are to be turned.
These and other objects and details of the invention are more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a face view of a modified form. Fig. 1 is a detail plan view of the modified operating means.
This device may be attached to the usual music rack of a piano or music stand, and is secured thereto by suitable means, such as the clip 5 and latch 6 engaging the central bar 7 so that the device may be placed in position or removed at will.
The central portion 8 carries a series of frames 9 arranged in stepped formation on the inclined bearings 12 and 13. To these frames may be secured the leaves or sheets of music by means of the clamps and 11.
Mounted on the base let is a spring returned pulley 15 operated by a cord 16. To the upper face of the pulley is secured a hub 17 provided with a recess, into which is fitted a lever 18. This lever is upturned at the extremity of its longer end so as to provide a finger 19 which is adapted to lie transversely across the lowest of the frames 9 and in contact with the same. Bearing upwardly on this end portion of the lever 18 is a spring 20.
When the cord 16 is pulled the pulley 15 is turned whereby the lever 18 is swung and the free end of the lowermost frame 9 is swung from one side of the center of the pulley 15 to the opposite side thereof.
An inclined plate 22 is mounted upon the base 11 adjacent the shorter end 21 of the lever 18. The outer end of the plate 22 is at a higher elevation than the inner end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915. Serial No. 666,099.
thereof. When the lever 18 is swung as hereinbefore described the shorter end 21 thereof moves in a path which is longer than the plate 22 and the ends of the path of movement of the shorter end 21 of the lever extend bevond the ends of the plate 22. However the higher end of the plate 22 is located above one end of the path of movement of the lever end 21 and the other end of the plate 22 is located below the other end of the path of movement of the lever end 21.
Presuming that the parts are in the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the lever 18 is swung to swing the lowermost frame 9. The short end 21 of the lever 18 passes under the higher end of the plate 22 and then passes along the under side of the same until it encounters the lower end of the said plate. Further movement on the part of the lever end 21 flexes the lower end of the plate 22 in an upward direction and the said end 21 passes under and beyond the lower end of the plate 22 which then springs back to its normal position. In the meantime the finger 19 upon the longer end of the lever 18 has turned or swung the lowermost frame 9. When the cord 16 is released the return spring of the pulley 15 turns the pulley whereby the cord is rewound thereon and the lever 18 is returned to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. W hen the lever 18 begins its return movement the short end 21 thereof first strikes the lower end of the plate 22 and then rides up along the upper surface there of. This tilts the lever 18 in the hub 17 against the tension of the spring 20. When the short end 21 of the lever arrives at the upper end of the plate 22 the finger 19 has been carried below and beyond the lowermost frame 9. Consequentlv when the short end 21 of the lever passes beyond the higher end of the plate 22 the tension of the spring comes into play and the lever 18 is tilted back in the hub 17 whereby the finger 19 is carried up transversely across and behind the lowermost frame 9 and in contact with the same.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3 the spring 20 is dispensed with, and the lever 18 is turned back on itself at 23 and is connected with the hub and serves as a spring for tilting the lever as it swings, as above described. The lever 18 is carried by a pinion 21 which is operated by a rack bar 25 having a return spring 26 attached to one end, While the other end is securedtoa bell- In order to hold the music and keep it.
from falling a clip 30 shown in the modified form, is provided at any suitable point on the central bar 8 where it may be adjusted to a desired point, and the back edge of the music may be inserted between the two jaws of the said clip.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, 7
A music leaf turner comprising a main frame, a series of frames pivotally mounted upon the main frame, the pivoted frames being in stepped relation vertically to each other, a spring pressed lever pivoted to swing under the pivoted frames and having an upturned finger adapted to engage the side of the lowermost frame of the pivoted frames, means for swinging the lever, means for returnin the lever, and an inclined plate located in the path of movement of the lever for tilting the lever against the tension of its spring during its swinging movement to carry the finger under the lowermost pivoted frame of the series, said plate terminating short of the ends of the paths of swinging movement of the lever and having one end disposed above the path of movement of the lever and the other end disposed below the path of movement of the lever.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
